I think its a good idea to shop around and compare each pet insurance broker's offer before committing, advice from the pup's vet would come as well, they would have more experience in this area than we do.

I have done a lot of 'reading' and 'enquiring' and it appears that Medibank Private is the best value for money for us. (We already have Pvt Health cover with them and are insuring 2 dogs)

I have looked at Suncorp, Medibank, 1300Insurance, RSPCA, Pet Plan, PIA, Bow Wow Meow and all but Suncorp & Medibank were under written by petsure.

Taking out Medibanks Gold Paw cover gives me $15000 per year claim limit on accident & illness and $165 per year on routine care (the silver cover drops to $12000 per year and no routine care for only $9.50 less per month so you are $51 in front by taking the higher as the $165 routine care will be used each year to cover heartworm, flea/tick treatment etc you would normally be out of pocket for) and is cheaper by between $6-$11 per month per animal to the other companies that offer a similar product.

Obviously everyone will find something different that works for them as you we will all want different things from our insurance, this is the one I have found works best for us and only has an excess of $100 but pays out 100%, as someone else said it's for the big ticket items so when the vet bill is $5000 I know I'm only paying $100 not 20% of $5000 like those that only cover 80%.

Hope you find something that works for you!

Edit: Our vet promotes Bow Wow Meow, but it didn't check out for us.

Most pet insurance owners consider this fact that pet insurance is the unnecessary aspect which makes you comfortable with the guarantee of health care of pet.

    What......
I just had a $1000 vet visit so when I pay my $100 excess and get $900 back my insurance for this year has been more than worth it (I only pay $600 per year)!!

    It isn't unnecessary its smart!

I have accidental injury for Johnny just because we are into dog sports (flyball and agility) and little chihuahua's have such fine bones!

I have health insurance, car insurance and home insurance - it makes sense to have pet insurance when everything else that matters to me is covered!
