    Default Vet Fees

    Hi Everyone,

I took Jenna to the vets today because she had sore eyes. She charged me $51.50 for the consultation and $30 for the cream. $80 dollars for conjuntivitis. Seems a bit extreme. What does you vet charge for a consultation. Is this an average amount? I had been bathing her eyes with boiled water/salt but they weren't getting better so I didn't want to mess around where her eyes are concerned.

It's 61.00 at my vet. They also do not offer payment plans if any antibiotics/etc are needed.

Yeh, I thought it should be about $30. It wasn't my usual vet so I might try and find an old bill and see what it says. I was only in there for 5 mins - $51.50 for 5 mins not bad eh?

Jenna's eyes are looking better already, though, so that's good.

Our vet charges $23.50 for a short consult. They don't charge for a follow up visit if related to the original consult. They're also pretty good at giving us freebies as well. They're also terrific about encouraging people to just drop in for a quick "Hiya" or weigh in so your dog doesn't freak when they have to come in when they're sick or for their annual "jab". My kiddies love going to the vet because they get spoiled by everyone.

Glad Jenna's eyes are on the improve.

I always have saline solution on hand. I used to have contact lenses & you can get single use containers which I found were fantastic for bits of grit or anything that might irritate the eye. The ones I have on hand are "Refresh Plus". Sometimes a good "flush" is all they need, but I understand if Jenna's problem was more severe & needed medication.

humans have a PBS for their drugs ie our drugs are subsidized by the Federal Government. Animals have no PBS so their drugs - even the same ones, are sometimes more expensive.

My vet will advise me if I can get the same thing cheaper elsewhere. They also give a discount on the consult for regular customers - so for something straight forward it's about $20 for the consult. But I never seem to get out of there for less than $100 after paying for the wormer, vaccinations and flea control and antibiotics or anti diahorrhea stuff.

Vets might not offer payment plans but most of them will rather you pay $10 a week or whatever you can afford than have to set the debt collectors onto you and have them take a slice of what you owe. So they might not offer but you can claim skintness and offer your own payment plan after the consult is done. They are more likely to accept gracefully if you are a regular and usually pay up. What they're afraid of are people who never pay up and keep switching vets to avoid paying up. It's a wonder they don't have a shared database of these people like real estate agents do.

$50 is about right for an initial consult these days.

    Hey guys!
Wow! Some of you pay $20-$30 ???
It's $55 for me. Usually end up with a $100-200 most times.
