Let me see - hong kong to Aus comes out at about $8500 Australian (guessing for both hips?)

I've got my dog's insurance with Pet Insurance Australia - which is backed by Hollards as is Medibank Private and lots of others. The main difference between the hollards backed policies is the maximum claimable amounts and sometimes the willingness for them to pay out ie the cheaper ones might be harder to make claims with but I don't know for sure.

There's only one other insurance backer in Australia for pet insurance and that's Allianz and I think they back Petplan as well. I've got personal reasons for not wanting to do business with Allianz ever again.

    Hi Katiehooo

I would send an email to these guys - they have a practice in Brisbane and in the general area. I've seen them recommended by someone else.

Explain that you're in Hong Kong, and you need some information to help you decide whether to get your dog sorted in Hong Kong or in Brisbane and that you would be paying (not insured).

So you'd need to know if they could help.

What the average price for hip dysplasia correction or hip replacement ie what would you need to budget for that, and what the recovery times are like and whether that would not be good for a dog in quarantine - ie how much time if you chose to have the surgery in Hong Kong - before the dog could comfortably come to Australia (and spend all that time in Quarantine).

They might want more details like copies of xrays and stuff but you just want a ball park idea of what it costs here compared to there and what the process is here.

There might be something other than "hip replacement" that can be done too. But they would not be able to give you an idea until you arrive.

vets in both countries might think it's not good for the quality of life for a border collie - or that you are made of money so it costs what it costs.

But it would be good if they could give you an idea of what to budget for diagnosis, surgery, recovery time wise and money wise if both hips needed doing.

Don't get too detailed in the first email - you need to get them to reply first and not just put your email in the e-bin. And if they can't help ie it's not what they do - ask them if they can refer you to a dog orthopaedic specialist. And then ask them.
