Thread: Working Bullmastiff Breeders - do they exist?

  1. #1

Default Working Bullmastiff Breeders - do they exist?

Are there any Bullmastiff breeders out there that have kept the working temperament and functional correctness alive?
We used to have a Bullmastiff and liked it's temperament but were very disappointed with the health issues and lack of ability to naturally protect.
It's time for us to get a new dog and I've looked at the show crowd breeders websites and see they have bred for excess skin around the face, etc so I won't even waste my time contacting them.

If there are any enthusiasts out there that have had any success in maintaining something resembling the original "Gamekeepers Night Dog" I love to hear where they are at.

If you want a dog that will naturally protect - I can recommend working line cattle dogs, and they're easy to get.

No idea about breeders outside the ANKC system, tho there might be some within the system / registry that don't show and don't breed to the current show trends that might be worth asking about.

There's quite a bit of variety in the face structure of the dogs shown on the bull mastiff breeder list on the dark side pages. Not all of them show, and those that do tend to say so on their page. Those ones are all ANKC registered.
    Bullmastiff Breeders, Australia

Good luck with your search and feel free to come back here and update us.

There is at least one mastiff owner in here but I'm a bit vague about where he got his slobber gobber.

We've tried a couple of different breeds since we had our Bullmastiff and we know there are some breeds that are good for protection which is just one of the elements we look for. It is the temperament of the Bullmastiff that brings us back. I'm thinking that surely there must be someone out there that has bred some to be a little sharper for work and ones that avoid the congenital health problems. It's just so frustrating looking at what the show crowd have done to another great breed. Some of the dogs I'm looking at on breeders pages almost look crippled, certainly nothing resembling the dog described in the breed history of the Bullmastiff.

I dare say back in the day Gamekeepers went through a few of these stubborn buggers before they found one with a bit of go in it.

I've seen some real solid brickhouse dogs who are all cuddles and kisses on the inside. I kinda like it like that though.

Hope you can find the dog you desire mate. Might even be worth asking the same question here on the FB page... I love my Bullmastiff.... https://www.facebook.com/groups/2204789533/

    Cheers.

Good luck as I have not seen many over the years. I suggest you look at this instead Ataraxia very lovely couple that breed Boerboels and Dogues. They will steer you right in any questions you have.
