Default Dog wont poo away from home

    Hey,

I have a 4.5yr old Male English Staffy who will not poo unless it is in our own back yard.

He never poo's when we walk him and whenever we have done day trips with him he will not poo all day but as soon as we get home he bolts into the yard and goes straight away.

This weekend I took him away with me to spend a few nights at a friends place. We left on Friday afternoon and returned at 9pm tonight (Sunday). He did not poo the whole time. As soon as we go out of the car tonight he ran straight into the yard a went to the toilet.
I also noticed that he urinated like a female dog all weekend instead of cocking his leg?

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem and interested in finding out if anyone knows why he would be acting like this and how it can be fixed?

    Thanks Guys

My Aussie, Koda, does this to a degree, but not as severe as your dog! Koda has only pooped once away from home, and that was on a weekend away. Other than that, he never ever poops on walks or days out. He pee's everywhere, lifting his leg on every tree i let him, but he never poops, lol

Not sure what would make your dog not want to poop anywhere, maybe he just doesn't feel comfortable/safe to do it anywhere except for home?

You can train a dog to poop on command and on lead.

I guess the easiest way to start with your dog - is when you know he's going to poop like when you first get home - put him on lead - so he has to poop on lead, take him to his favourite spot and tell him the "go potty" word of your choice. And give him a treat when he's done - if he will take one.

You might find he's slightly more comfortable doing a poop away from home if he knows you "approve" and if he knows you're standing guard for him while he's being vulnerable.

My dog would rather poop anywhere but home - even tho I clean up as fast as she dumps - it's not like the home yard is covered in crap - she'd rather go somewhere else. So if she hasn't gone at the park (which I pick up) she will do a sort of emergency dump just before we get home...

My guess is that it would be related to confidence, especially given that he also pees like a girl (urinating moreso than marking).

When he's away from home he is perhaps scared of attracting predators or rival packs to your location and so is trying to minimise the signs he leaves.

I read about a similar thing in that some cats bury their food. It's not to save it for later because they never come back for it, it's to avoid attracting other predators to their location.

In regards to what to do to fix it, I don't know if you can. Best idea I can think of would be as Hyacinth said, to teach him to go on command. I never taught my dog a separate command for defecating vs urinating so if I say go toilet, he will just do what he needs to do. I suppose it might be possible, but tbh and this might be tmi, whilst I'm sure I could pee on command I can't promise I could always deliver on the other.

Yes - I only have one "word" for both - it's "shitnapiss" because "Mr Rabbit" just doesn't work for me somehow.

You must come home daily and let your dog poo till trained otherwise

I have a GSD who used to have this as a rule. "i must be in my own garden before i can poo"
We trained him to go in a small area, not specific spot of our garden. So first, i tightened up on that, and made it command specific, not spot specific.
Then we took it on the road. Camping. Fed him lots of leftovers, rich spicey, bbq stuff, and waited till around 30 mins after eating, my dogs usually poo. < you notice these patterns. So after eating extra rich laxative foods, i took him to new camping spot, and gave command to poo. And waited, and waited, and then blocked the track approaching us, so he was safe all round, then and only then, he went. Funny old fart is bernie. Needs to know you've got his back, before he'll pull down his trousers
