Thanks for the more friendly replies!
I suppose my question would have been better phrased 'how harmful is it' since I know it's not exactly healthy

    Cheers, GTF

My last dog, Jack, used to regularly do "spray cans"(i.e liquid explosion from the rear end) at the beach from the salt water he would ingest getting his ball out of the water. No doubt it comes down to just how much salt water your dog is ingesting and how frequently.

Yes my dogs did too so I had to swop the ball for a floating frisbee or a dumbbell shape so their mouths would stay more closed when swimming back to shore. This seemed to solve the salt water ingestion.

Personally I would try and discourage it or prevent it as I doubt it is particularly healthy long term. If he is only doing occasionally I wouldnt worry too much. Vet could probabaly give you a more definitive answer.

well, if he drinks to much and gets sick, lets hope he is a fast learner.
if he don't get sick, and nothing bad happens, i guess he not having enough and hopefully has sense not to have to much

No dig at all. Most people's dogs could not get into a fenced off pool.
