I met a lady at the park yesterday. She has a gorgeous but quite naughty kelpie around 8 months old. I said the age of irrational fear and selective hearing... and we got to chatting about all things dogs and it came around to desexing and at what age and all that.

She said the kelpie is her son's dog and she's waiting for him to do it. I said - you want to be careful because 6 months to 12 months is usually when a dog has their first heat and explained what that was and how messy it is and the puppy risk... I also told her about putting the dog on the pill if she still wants to wait for her son to stump up the money but she might as well get used to the idea that the kelpie is really her dog now...

I know working breeders who breed their best bitches fairly frequently. The bitch is pregnant, weans her pups and then 8 months or so later is put back into pup. The breeders take a lot of care of the bitches health and nutrition because they are valuable dogs selected for their genetics. The bitches I know are healthy and fit and there doesnt seem to be a problem very often. A friend of mine whose 13 yo top working bitch has had many litters is now retired to do as she pleases but she still likes to do a bit of work.

It is a different context to the original post but these top bitches do often have a lot of pups in their lifetime and the ones I have seen are very fit and healthy and definitely not worn out.

However the health and nutrition, exercise and training is very high on the agenda of the owners of these working bitches.

I think after we chatted she went away and it sank in. Like I said she is not a nasty person just comers from a different era.
Glad to hear your friend finally got the massage...as there are far to many unwanted dogs in pounds and shelters now as a result of people like this.
