Default Dogs who wont take medicine?

Ha ha, as most of your know, pohm is on meds. a annoying 2.5ml liquid, and 1 tablet twice a day.
I am a nurse, i tend to medicate dogs fast, no fuss. done/dusted.

    cept pohm is beating me!

    I do above fast/done method.
only this dog (rottie trait) can and does regularly regurgitate food and re eats.
so, im waiting 20mins post meds in, and what i am getting is this....

She attempts to regurgitate, and begins some serious frothing at mouth. think rabies horror film.
shakes the froth everywhere as does not like being 'messy' on her face
then once ive finished waiting 20 mins under close supervision, in theory, meds should of absorbed. - she then regurgitates partially digested pill. like 3/4 of dose.
I am not her fave person right now and wont come near me near meds time.

she's being a pain in my butt over these meds. and not getting accurate dosages.

Would it be possible to crush the tablet up and mash it in with a bit of peanut butter? With the liquid could you let a dog biscuit absorb it? then would he eat the biscuit? Im not sure if this would effect how the medicine works as its delivered differently?

Ah that all sounds very pleasant Bernie. Unfortunately that's all I can think of too - to try and disguise the meds into a treat or something. Ha, like you haven't already thought of that. If a nurse can't do it, what hope have i got? She'd have it all over me

Not good at all Bernie, poor you and Pohm!!
The only 'trick' I really have is to blow on their nose once you put the tablet down their throat, it makes them well and truly swallow them, but it probably won't work if she's regurgitating it.
With the liquid medicine, try mixing it in with some lactose free milk- that's how I've been giving Meika her metacam the last few weeks

Are you saying she makes herself throw up because she knows you gave her meds? Or do they just make her feel sick?

Disguising them may work better either way. I always give pills wrapped in mince. And always have another meatball in my other hand to show them as soon as they've accepted the first to make them swallow quickly so they can open their mouths for the next one. Sometimes it pays off to use their greed to your advantage...

I also give my cat crushed Comfortis in milk (dose is too big to force down her throat and she is very fussy about food, like most cats) . If it works for her, I would imagine it might work for a dog too?

I cover the worming tablet in peanut butter, and then put the peanut butter glob inside a sardine. The sardine gets swallowed whole... never touches the sides and certainly doesn't come back to haunt us. Peanut butter alone does not achieve this.

Maybe the tablets make Pohm feel sick... maybe you need an anti nausea tablet too. Not sure what I'd do with liquid. If it didn't taste bad - maybe serve with yogurt? And definitely follow up with a gob full of something strong tasting but yummy (another half sardine).

    ha ha ha
yes i am saying, that she will regurgitate a tablet, deliberately, asap. which means, 20 mins after i put it down her throat! grrrrrr
I felt sorry for her on night one, we put it in sausage slice. couldnt see it. She ate slice, spat out tablet. At which point i turned into nurse ratchet and called time.
From then on in, i have no issue, on having her swallow meds. If i dont do a collar hold, she starts a mini break dance, and up comes froth, which i then have to wade through to find out how much of a dose she has had.
when i pop the pill debris back down the throat and hold her, jaw up. she'll swallow.

then and only then, do i move to a collar grab, or she goes into expel pill phase 2, froth at the mouth antics. deliberately, and happens immediately i pop the pill in, so nowt to do with medicine.

So im not sure i need to blow on her nose, as this is to make dogs swallow. I like that idea though. Gonna try that. She'll swallow anyway, but id like to try the trick.

Sardine. Sounds effective, but what if its not? ugggh. Im gonna hold on that one, as like i said, swallowing tablet, administering tablet, not an issue. Getting a rottie to keep it down, is the problem. Rotties yak their food for fun guys!

And i got home from work last night to a post it note on fridge from hubby that read:
"it took me 2hrs to get the meds into her, and 5 minutes for her to give it back gift wrapped in puke! I tried, honestly, really tried, but I gave up"

It had been a heck of a shift, acute psych admission on a friday night. Not my fave shift. Ice ice and more Ice idiots. Not really feeling too sorry for Miss wont take my meds. So dosed her. sat her next to me, and as she tried to break dance, having her sit stay. in my dont mess with me voice.

She sat next to me, and im writing an essay on computer, as i start to type, she heaves oh so gently, working her throat. I look over at her and she stops, puts her head down 'nothing to see here' puppy dog eyes. I go back to typing, and i see her rib cage is moving again, but she's being real quiet about it. I tell her off and she stops. We do this for 30 mins, then i put her and me to bed.

Same bloody dog i was grovelling for her life with vets and put myself in hock for, ungrateful bitch! lol
