Thread: Mystery breed - any clues? Kelpie x?

Default Mystery breed - any clues? Kelpie x?

Hi everyone. This is my first time posting. Out of huge curiosity and the persistent enquiries of people - as to what breed my dog Nacho is, I thought it was a great idea to ask dog lovers! I obtained him from a rescue centre (in New Zealand, in a very rural area). Their estimate was he is a Kelpie x, my vet seems to think so too. He's a very cutesy looking guy, very lean, almost as fast as a greyhound. Smart and a very quick learner, but a little stubborn but MASSIVE personality, bit smaller than a Kelpie (hes almost 2yrs old). Hes very people focused and crazy for other dogs. A dog handler suggested Red Heeler x, but Im not so sure about that. Most Heeler mixes Ive seen have the distinctive spots, Nacho has none.

Because he gets so much attention everywhere he goes, non stop people ask what is he where can I get one.

Im hoping someone out there has seen a similar breed mix, or if anything really stands out about him as unmistakably attributed to a particular breed I would love to know!!! Much appreciated in advance.

Welcome to the forum! I'm hopeless at guessing breeds, but he is one very handsome dog!

Welcome Nacho is very cute! I can see some kelpie in there but I can also see Basenji... Maybe it's just because of the colouring though..

    Definitely can't see red heeler.

I have two 'mystery' breeds too, they're the best type good on you for rescuing Nacho!

Thanks everyone for your comments. Ive had a few people suggest Basenji. Oddly he looks the spitting image of a rare breed called a Portuguese Podengo, but as far as Im aware, not available in NZ and very few in Aussie.

There are two Portuguese podengos at our local dog park... Very very cute but quite small.. About the size of a large chihuahua or small jack Russell... They could come in different sizes though, I've never really researched into the breed too much

Really, wow. Seems like there are more around than I thought. Yes they come in 3 sizes, two coats - wire and smooth. Nacho closely resembles the Medio smooth.

The two at our park were the first I've ever heard of.. The couple is very much into their showing and spent a fortune buying them!! These are smooth coated too but I seem to recall reading that they can come in small, medium or large

'Nacho' - and welcome to the forum !

Cute looking pup from the photos - so my guess for breeding - kelpie x corgi !

Welcome! Good looking dog you have there, I'd go with Riley J and say kelpie corgi.
Rescues are always the best looking breeds IMHO
