    Default The BYB strikes again...

I've been watching this situation unfold for some time now. My friend's daughter and her boyfriend bought dogs specifically because they wanted to breed them. The male is Amstaff/English Staff cross, the female is supposedly pedigree Amstaff (no papers, bought from BYB in western Sydney). She's a tiny little dog, he's huge, but they've had no health problems with them and now they have a litter of 7 pups that are nearly 6 weeks old. My friend's daughter has just put them on Gumtree and is finally having misgivings and realising that everything she's been warned about is true.

The 2nd day the pups were online she had a call from bloke in Darwin who wanted to buy a male pup for his son who was about to graduate in some course he'd supposedly done so well at. She has $500 on the pups, he offered $800 to secure one. Somehow by the end of the conversation (I think because she sounded gullible), he'd decided he wanted 3 male pups, offered $1800 plus the cost of flying them from Coffs Harbour to Darwin.

What you guys think? He a dog fighter?

I think it's a scam, I've heard of similar ones with selling cars... Wants to buy it for more than the asking price for a family member who has just graduated but needs it shipped somewhere else. If it was me, I'd drop all contact with him immediately. Either way, it can't be a good thing.

Yeah to dodgy for me. Considering how available this type of mutt is it is a bit unbelievable that he would want to pay that much when he could source more than enough where he is now.

There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.

hard to say if he is a dog fighter for many reasons, i think he may be someone that wants to start byb'ing. amstaff as i understand it are not from fighting stock per se and if he was a serious fighter he would be breeding and buying from proven sources with his own networks. not draw attention to himself by buying from a stranger outside the circle. he could steal or just get for free any number of bull dog types locally without paying for some randoms off gum tree.

i can't see these guys sourcing dogs this way and exposing themselves, and way to expensive for bait dogs.

if you have concerns try engage the guy in conversation and get the police to monitor it, get the scum.

Yeah all good points, it was obviously dodgy, but I couldn't figure out what his aim was. And why he'd want 3 males.

Kristy.Maree - what's the scam? do they somehow get the seller to part with the goods before they pay?

We've all screamed 'dodgy' to the poor girl, who is now beside herself trying to figure out how she can ensure good homes for the pups. I believe she won't be considering him.

dhru - put the "poor girl" on here and i will give her a "chat" about selling/buying dogs site unseen from a classified ad on the internet, she will never be the same girl again.

I'm not sure how it works, I think they convince the seller to send them money for transport with the promise they will pay them back and then they disappear off the face of the earth

    It's a straight up scam.

Gum tree is strictly for face to face transactions. Tell the bloke he can have a dog when he shows up with the cash. But I would like to do a yard check - so maybe return air tickets - or we might be able to find someone in Darwin to do the yard check...

It's the overpayment scam... or variations on that theme.

There's plenty of amstaff like dogs available in Darwin so why would this bloke want ones from so far away?

That makes sense Hyacinth, I couldn't see how the scam would work, now I do.

    Umm...what's a King Solomon?
I don't know either. I thought maybe it was one of those damn autocorrect things (eg not a king Charles cav...)
