Default basenji - anyone got one??

i have seen a few and they seem super cool, can't see why people want them as pets as they seem the oppositte of a pet dog. i would love to try them hunting, make a great cross with my hound type mutts i would think.

I don't have them but as I show dogs in the hound ring I see quite a few and know people with them. No I wouldn't have them, but many people adore them as pets. It's probably more about what people want from a pet than whether or not they fit a generalised sort of pet-image. Lots of breeds are different from what people expect from a "normal" pet. But many people don't like normal...

In Australia they are classed as Sighthounds. In Europe they are classed as Spitz type. They share traits with both families. And both families are chock full of dogs that seem opposite of a pet dog in many ways...

thanks info, my only concern with these type of breeds is people buying them cos they look cool whatever and make no provision for what the dog is and expect them to just be a sterotypical pet lab, something about round pegs and square holes. if the people buying them understand their needs and cater for their drives then it's a perfect world.

I know someone who has what we think is a basenji cross (rescued dog).

It's not really big on doing what it's told - which makes obedience school and agility training interesting.

    It is very cute tho.

Don't know why you'd suggest crossing it (trolling?), there just aren't that many around - or did you mean it would fit in well with the dogs you already have?

'muttboy' - I really hope that you have in your hand a very large stirring spoon - with regard to making your comment that has been bolded above !

There are more than enough X breeds around with dubious temperaments and health issues.
Do we really need anymore ?

relax, i said i thought they would make a great cross, i am not going to make such a cross, unless i get a lot of experience with the breed and know individual dogs really well, unlikely that will occurr so unlikely i would do a mating, was more thinking out loud.

Hooch is a Basenji cross - he is a bad bad hunter, he cant even find us when we play hide and seek lol
He can hardly see, his hearing sucks and he only sniffs food!
He also barks when he is frustrated.. although his bark always sounds the same which is funny.
