    Default Breed??

    Hey there,

First thread on the site A little while ago, my mum bought Leo (from, I do not know where) for my step father as a birthday present because he wants a short-legged jack russell. Since then, it's become very obvious that Leo isn't one, and as such, he's become my dog. However, the problem that has arised is that we don't even know what Leo is! I have no intention of doing anything with him other than keeping him as a pet, so what he really is isn't an issue, we'd just like to know.

I've asked a few people, and they say something like a jack russell x whippet cross. Would this be likely?

    Hi and welcome!!

To me he has the eyes of a whippet, and that first picture definitely looks like one, by the look of his snout. But other than that he looks all jack russell. But thats just my opinion! He is one beautiful dog though

Thanks. Yeah, he is a nice looking dog. You might not be able to see it, but he has a very deep/large chest as well, as compared to other pure jack russells we've had in the past. Does this mean anything?

I have had a pure jack russel in the past, and she was a lot smaller than your dog, so I definitely think he is crossed with something. As for the deep/large chest, I can't really see it in the pictures so it's hard to tell. But his legs are rather long and thin as well, so I am definitely thinking there is some whippet in him. I'm sure a lot of others on here will post their opinions as well

Whippet x JRT would be a good guess.

It's difficult to tell from photos. I find watching a dog move helps a lot in trying to guess breeds. The sighthound gait is very distinctive and is usually evident in the first cross and often for several generations.

Back in the olden days your little guy would have been a great dog for gypsies and poachers to use for illegal hunting of small game.

Whatever he is he is a very handsome young man.

    Hi
    &

    Your dog's a little cutie!
I must say, I'm struggling with this one. The Jack R features are very dominant, maybe JR x staffy? That would explain the large chest too, or JR x Whippet x staffy.

Thanks for that. He certainly is good at catching things. He's the one that catches the mice we sometimes find running around the house

Hi Magdalena, I wouldn't have thought staffy. My partner has staffies, and his chest is no where near as deep or large as theirs are. I'll see if I can get some more photos of him.

Her certainly doesn't look much like a jacky in body shape or size. I can see Tenterfield in him perhaps...not sure about whippet but it is hard to see from the pics.... I'd even say the possibility of Kelpie in there going by the shape of the head.
