Thread: Kelpie? Is he a Kelpie?

Default Kelpie? Is he a Kelpie?

    Hi,
I've had my dog Tango for 2 years now. I always have people stop me and ask what breed he is. Apparently he appears to be a pure bred dog to people which is why they ask.
He is 40 lbs. Smart as a whip. EXTREMELY trainable. He can go ALL DAY. If I walked across the country he would follow me without stopping. He is incredibly loyal. The gate gets left open all the time, but he has no desire to leave us. Velcro dog.

I'm pretty savvy with breeds. He has no GSD in him. I've had GSD's and he is not. lol

I always thought he looked a bit cattle dog -ish'. But only a bit.

I then stumbled upon the Australian Kelpie pictures online and I almost screamed. He looks so similar to them. Now I'm sure he is 1,000,000 different things and has no kelpie blood in him at all.
But is it just me or could I fib to people that he IS in fact a Kelpie and get away with it? lol I'm sure he's a mut, but if I could say at least what he is mixed with, that would be cool.

As a Kelpie owner and lover, i'd say his personality sounds absolutely 100% Kelpie! He looks it as well! If you told me he's a pure bred Kelpie i would have believed you, either way, he's a gorgeous dog!
What makes you so sure that he doesn't have kelpie in him? i'd say he definitely has some Kelpie in him... if not totally Kelpie!

(bit off topic but i'm curious... where did you get your username from? i like it!)

shepherd, kelpie, and a couple of other breeds in there too. He doesnt look like a pure kelpie at all especially tail, head and neck. His temperament also matches quite a few other breeds out there so I think you have a 100% genuine mutt there lol

(not being nasty, just genuinely curious) what is it about the head and neck that says 'not Kelpie' to you?
These threads are always interesting, so much controversy!

He looks very like a kelpie to me.

Slightly heavier in coat and bone to many of the working Kelpies around here (fine-wool sheep country = lots and lots of kelpies!!), more like the show kelpies.

    Absolutely beautiful dog!
Where do you live? Climate could account for the coat.
The ears seem not quite right to me.

I would say kelpie is in the mix perhaps with a little bit of cattle dog?. Cattle dogs are very velcro. I have a working bred kelpie and she is finer. I also agree the neck, tail and head are not quite kelpie.

    Lovely dog though

I got BadWolf from Doctor Who!

I didn't NOT think he was part kelpie, I just didn't want to keep my hopes up that he was. He came from a shelter way out here in California! I'm in the states.

that's what I was thinking. a lot of the pictures of "show Kelpies" is what he resembles most. Maybe a breeder out here had some puppies and one ended up in the shelter?

or a mutt bred with one of their dogs and they didn't want the puppies so they ended up in the shelter
