Default dog's breath smells like poo .... YUK

Three times in the last 2 weeks Misha's breath has smelt like dog poo. Nothing different in her diet, and the smell isn't there all the time, but when it is it's foul.
The first time I noticed it was when I woke one morning and before I opened my eyes I thought from the smell that Misha had her butt in my face, I opened my eyes and was looking into her face, not her butt!
The other 2 occasions were during the day ... I'd become a dog breath sniffer LOL!
Sooo, usually her breath smells fine, but I'm confused about the occasional foul dog poo smell on her breath.
Her diet is BARF with chicken wings or segments of lamb flaps (fat removed).
Any ideas? Should I be concerned?

Do a bit of homework 'grevillea47' - smell travels !

Anal glands have a certain perfume that once smelt - it really can not be anything else - regardless whether you are smelling the front end or not !!!!

She's not eating is she? Some dogs do, quite often dogs on a raw diet or high fat diet are attracted to eating poo.

    How are her teeth?

The vet checked her teeth in September and said they were excellent, I've had a look in her mouth and can't see any problems there. I suspect that if there was an oral problem the smell would be on her breath all the time?
Yes, she loves dried cat poo but rarely gets it.

Riley I'm not sure what you mean:

She licks her private bits but I don't think she can reach her anus, or can she??

    Mine can lol
and bernie only has to 'relax' a little, and some of the scented secretion will come out, which he licks, he then breaths and voila, shit for breath!

Bernie you've got me thinking! Misha has longish fur so it's hard to see where she's actually licking down there! Maybe she can reach that far! I always thought dogs couldn't lick their own A's, never to old to learn ....
I just love the expression 'scented secretion'

'grevillea47' - by homework - I meant to look at what she actually does and also what has caused her grief in the past.

You covered in your initial post all the usual suspects for bad breath in pups - such as teeth problems, change in diet and you mentioned that the problem was only intermittent. As she had been recently to the vet, I presumed that her ears were also OK.

So that is why I mentioned the dreaded anal glands again. If she is licking that area and with her fur around her face she could also be getting some of that fluid around this area which you would be able to smell.

There are very few places a determined pup can't reach on their bodies and the back end area is usually a favourite place for them to lick - more so female dogs.

So if this is not very often - it is just an another example of the joys of dog ownership !

Have a look at this website - but it is more to do with having a smelly pup:

Dr Katrina.com - pet advice and pet friendly accomodation

    and

Dogs Life Articles, Dog Information - Dog Breeders - Dog Training,

Hope you get to the 'bottom' of this !
