Thread: What has your experience been using a DNA test for your dog?

Default What has your experience been using a DNA test for your dog?

I have bought a DNA test from BITSA for 150 dollars. I completed it today and sent it off.
I personally cannot wait for the results.

I have heard some are happy with the DNA test and some not.

I would be curious to know what your experience has been with a DNA test.

    Cheers

I know of a pure newfoundland dog.....Who was definitely guaranteed to be a newfie ( looked like my Lukey) who came out with a very mixed bag result.....I cannot remember the exact ones, had it written somewhere, but cannot find it.
Newfie's are a very old breed, so this should not have happened..it was done as a check by some people who thought it was all a bit suspect.

Anyway, you hve some idea what your dog is, so it should be interesting, please post the result

Please do....if it turns out accurate, I will seriously be considering it. BG's sounded quite close!

I was looking at these testing kits tonight and it said that the mixed breed kits/tests are not designed to test pure-bred dogs and also stated that they will no be accurate at all if used on purebred dogs.. maybe unusual results for purebred dogs were received because a mixed breed testing kit was used and not a purebred one?

I really don't know if I trust them 100% but it probably will give you a rough idea of the type and breed.. and if the results come back and are totally ridiculous then at least you get $150 worth of laughter!

Lol..yes I absolutely laughed at your last comment. I will indeed get a laugh if that is the case. Thanks for a smile today.

It tests for any known genetic issues too apparently.

See this is the thing I do not understand. They use markers from pure breds I thought I read, so how can it not test for a pure bred?

There was another company I considered going with as they had a few more breeds on their list to use as markers. I also noticed the Maremma was not on the BITSA list. The Siberian Husky and Mastiff are though.

Still going to enjoy the results either way. I actually ordered them before I could get a hold of the person who bred Luka to be in this world. So I was committed to do it anyways or lose my 150 dollars

I really want to do this my maltese x, (if there accurate) the vet reckoned she was mixed with a 'mini foxy' but who knows. She is smaller then the average maltese though.
No one loves you like your dog does.

OK... I've posted this in another thread a while ago. Perhaps it'll stop some of you to waste hard earned cash.

Take a look at these pictures ... According to BITSA you're looking at a Lab (about 50%) x Pomeranian (about 25%) x Cavalier King Spaniel (about 25%)... the rest is pretty much everything else. Seriously. Not. Worth. The. Money.

I have to say it was a good laugh though!
