    Default Tracking

    Hi all,

I was talking to someone at Better Pets and Gardens who said that tracking is fun for dogs and in Perth, Trackwest runs tracking training on Saturday mornings from April to September at Gnangara Pine Plantation.

I've just looked at their web-site and they have an open day on 31 March at Whiteman Park, I think I'll go along and see what it's about. I don't think that Ruby's obedience/discipline is up to scratch yet or if it needs to be, but she is definitely enthusiastic

Is 9 months too young or old to start tracking, or is it something that can be done at any age ?

Tracking is fun.............And we have a few dogs that go and they do not fgo to obedience, but they are great at tracking

we do all our tracking with the GSD club.......We are honorary GSD members LOL..we also do Obedience Demo's with them

Katy started at 10 weeks old, but Tessa started at four, so that gives lots of scope. My dogs love their tracking harness and pull like mad when it goes on, because they are out front, noses to the ground and running......

Some dogs are useless at it Annabelle is........She will only track food tracks, with lots of treats, once food is gone she looks dumb and stays beside you and looks up and says, where do we go?

Tessa is an air sniffer and katy is a ground sniffer, both quite different.

I have a great story, a friend of mine who also shows her dogs. went to a show. Someone had lost their dog, it had run away , got a scare. My friend brought out her tracking newfie ( who was all dolled up to be shown) and they went to search for the lost dog (GSP). The dog was found quite some distance away .........My friend did not show that day, because her dogs was not tidy enough anymore and very tired.

We love tracking, we will be starting as soon as the weather is cooler....Have fun

Thanks Newfsie, it does sound like fun, and will wear Ruby out by the sounds of it, I'll give it a try. She is a ground sniffer when we walk, but I think that's just because all the smells along the footpath are so exciting to her. I must do more research and find out if we have a GSD club that does tracking, I only know about Trackwest.

I'll go to the tracking open day and join up and book us in, I'm quite excited about it. How fantastic to think that your dog could find a missing dog or person. I can remember a family in Perth a year or two ago that lost their dachshund, she had lost weight and escaped through the fence and people who saw her kept chasing her to catch her and she kept running and running and the family tried to hire the services of a tracking dog but they didn't have any luck, they never found their little girl. How kind of your friend to offer her tracking newfie to find the dog, bet those people were so thankful.
