You have to sometimes figure the reason for digging in each individual dog.
Is it for getting cool. A little shell pool might help to play in, change the water often
has it become self satisfying, meaning the action of digging is giving a endorphin fix......Same reason some people have to exercise. Dog needs lots of real active exercise.
Is it for exercise and energy release or from frustration/boredom, which can become a habit. And end up like the statement before.

We have a sandpit, which is very large and deep under a tree....We used to bury treats and toys in it for our young potential diggers. They love it and run out in the morning, looking for treats.
We also give our dogs a lot of exercise before we go out/to work.......Lots so that they are happy just sleeping. Ball chasing can give the same sort of self satisfying feeling.
When we leave our dogs at home we keep ours indoors or in their kennel run/room, where they have another sand pit.

If there are areas you do not want the dogs to dig, you may have to put wire down, or fence it off. there are the balloon tricks and mouse traps in the hole tricks.

Mostly i think it comes from boredom and frustration...Lots of interactive toys and energy spent in exercise usually helps. I will always go back to basic obedience and leadership. It changes a lot of things in a dogs life. if they have the basics, they often are just easier to get along with, Just having two dog pals helps, but is not the fix. it will have to come from you. Lots of exercise with lots of obedience
I have only just got my kelpie about three months ago and she has just started digging, i researched google and read that putting there own poo in the hole can stop them digging. I am not sure if it has worked yet.. I think the sandpit idea is good.. But what if you do not own the property? Do you have any ideas as to what i could use to do this with? I have a shell but would this satisfy her? It's not a very big area.. This is the first dog i have trained so i am still learning. Any ideas i would be greatful for.

Well Alvy dug a nice big hole today for me, so when i got home I stuffed it full of poo....lol. I went out for a bit and when i came back I could see he had been back at the hole but decided to move on as he didnt dig it back up but moved on and dug another smaller hole, which i also have now filled with poo.....it is a battle of wills LOL.

could be bordom try poking holes in a 2ltr coke bottle make sure the holes are just big enough for a dog biscut to fall out of.then put in a hand full of bici"s into the bottle and give it to him he will roll it around and chew on it for hours and when he has hammered it toss it and do another.it works for me.
