    Default Dog kennel help!!!!

    Hi there,

Need some help my cocker spaniel wont bother going into his kennel and just sits out in the rain, usually when we are not home, he constantly stands at the gate waiting for us to return.

Is there any ideas that could get him to go into his kennel when the rain comes? Afraid he is gonna catch something standing in the cold

    Thanks

    Michael

    Firstly welcome to the forum.

Does he have a mat etc inside the kennel? Has he sat on this mat before placing it in the kennel?

Goodluck. Mine won't either they would rather roll around in the mud than stay nice and dry the bloody buggers. hence why i leave them in my garage on a rainy day

Sorry for the second post but you could also when it starts to rain place a high valeue toy in the kennel like a kong stuffed with goodies and try doing this a few times so the dog learns that rain = kennel and huge reward

I wouldnt worry about it. If he sits in the rain, he sits in the rain....

I would find it sad if my dog would stand at the gate in the rain all day too...

Sounds like he might be suffering from separation anxiety. Maybe if you can do some work on that, he might be more inclined to make himself comfy when you're out? I know there's a few techniques to help with that, but I have never used them myself. Maybe others can point to some good info? Also, can you interest him in toys, bones and other things to keep him busy when you go out? Maybe distractions would make him less anxious too? Just brainstorming here...

Oh and if all else fails, could you move the kennel closer to the gate, and facing the gate? I don't think that is the ideal solution, but it may (or may not) help.

My dogs all love their kennels, apart from the ones in their run the others are placed near doors, one on the front verandah right outside our bedroom glass sliding door the other is right next to the back door. Not exactly the most attractive look, though we have painted our kennels to match the house, but at least by putting them where they like to lay they get used.

If your dog likes waiting for you at the gate I'd put a shelter there. Also remember if your Cocker is in good condition then his coat will be well equipped for the wet weather and if he's anything like my Gordon Setter, which looks very much like a larger version of a cocker, they feel the heat but not really the cold or wet.
