I have had the flap to the doggy door tied up for a month now, just to motivate her to use it and she is always happy to go through when it's up. Mac, you are right in the fact that it is a little harder for her to get through it. She has to do a little duck type thing and her weird gangly legs usually hit the bottom of the frame. The flap is made from hard plastic and does make a pretty loud bang. Plenty of room for her to get through..even i can slide through no worries (comes in handy when i accidentally lock myself out the house!)
Funny thing is yesterday i went home all determined to get her through that damn door. I untied it, so the flap was down. Did the usual me on one side with treats, her on the other to coax her through and she went through every single time without a worry. She even started to show off just how good she was. I do wonder if the confusion lies in the fact that sometimes i close the door off by shutting the glass door. So to her (because she can't see that glass door) it's like sometimes she can get through and other time not. Buckley seems to understand it but i'm not so sure Abbie does.
I'm thinking about investing in one of those gentle leader harnesses for both of the dogs..They're both pretty awful on the lead. She madly tries to jump on Buckley, whilst he's pulling like a freight train.
The jumping is a hard one because when we got her (she was all ready 6 months), the breeders would let her jump up at them for attention.
Maybe she is smarter than she lets on but sometimes she just does the weirdest, ditziest things and i just look at her and wonder how she was ever considered to be a show dog. haha
