    Default Training Shopping List

When starting training what would you say is needed in your goody bag?

Before I can get a trainer in for Ruby I have figured I should get off my butt and start some training on my own.

Sadly enough even her sit isnt down pact!

    So..

    I have bought

    - A clicker
    - A gentle leader
    - A Basics of dog training book

Is there anything else that helped you in the early days of training?

Have you used a clicker before? If not make sure you read up on the correct use of a clicker. A clicker is a marker only and should never be used to get your dogs attention etc.

With treats use treats of different values, Ie have something of low value, something of medium value and something of high value so for me that would be

    Low - Dry Food/Bickies
Med - Schmakoes/Similar Meat based treats
    High - Raw meats/Cheese

That way you can reward your dog with something akin to the value of the behaviour offered. Ie: Sit gets a low reward treat but coming when called gets a high value treat.

Do you also know about jackpotting? You jackpot when a dog does something faster than usual, or does a trick/behaviour for the first time. To try and make sure that behaviour is repeated you give the dog up to 10 treats (don't just grab ten treats and hold your hand out you actually have to give them one treat at a time so they understand) as a jackpot.

Also I would highly suggest you get a hands free training belt. Especially as Ruby is leash reactive, it makes all the difference in the world that you are not transferring tenseness through your arm and stops you from involuntarily pulling on the lead when you shouldn't (part of a reason a lot of dogs have leash aggression is owners inadvertantly or purposely pulling back on a leash when they encounter other dogs), it also frees up both hands to click and treat.

Treat bag, makes grabbing your treats much quicker and easier and you can usually store your keys, poo bags etc in pockets in them as well.

I would also go for a material based martingale collar before a gentle leader. Particularly as Ruby is a Bracchy breed.

A 4m Leash is also good when starting to do recalls from a distance. I have a 2m double ended leash, a 4m leash, a 9m lunge line and a 30m long line from when I was doing recall training with Batty.

Oh, chicken chunkers or lamb chunkers are great for treats too. Meaty etc, easily frozen and I chop mine up into little pieces for training. The lumps that they are are a bit big!

With treats, use small pieces, 1cm cubed is more than enough as a treat, lots of little bits often makes the dog think that it's been rewarded a lot more than a dog who's done tonnes only to recieve one lump of food. Plus the smaller bits are easily chewed and swallowed meaning you can get on with the next bit faster.
