I think the main 2 thing is repetativness and rewards.

Do it as much as possible, being very excited and like pat your knees and call him and when he gets to you reward him with either a treat or lots of pats and play.

They eventually associate their name with a reward of some kind.

I didnt get my dog until she was 10 1/2 weeks old. We started pretty much straight away and i think after about a week she was coming only when we were really excited and patting our knees and then maybe two or three weeks to actually come to her name without having to be crazy excited.

So I would say by 12-13 weeks she had a fair idea that "Ruby" was something important.

To add that to actually come to her name just by saying it without making a fuss can still not work 100% of the time and my dog is 14 months old lol

They learn it when they learn it. As BDL said call name, dog comes, treat (food, toy, pats) given then go nuts with praise, do a happy dance etc lol. It works. Later on make it random that the treat is offered and then it can be phased out.

It will take longer if there are more attractive distractions...in my case mooing cows next to the house.

My 3 answer to human names, the cats' as well as each other's. Sometimes I give up getting to the right name and just say oi, you.

haha me too. three dogs and a cat running around the house I usually just yell out "OI!" and they tend to freeze and look at me .... no real training involved with that one

LOL yep we do "oi" here too and "exCUSE me"

MY dogs come to their names and a bunch of nicknames each. Barney will come to Pippi's name (because he cant stand the idea of her receiving attention without him) and Pippi will sometimes not come at all because shes an ignorant little tart.
