    Post Dog Obsessing Over Possum

Hi all my one year old Spoodle has been obsessing over a possum that is sometimes in the back yard but unfortunately its become a habit of it sitting staring out the front glass door and when let out at night even when the possum isnt there running round looking for it
Does anyone have anyone have any tips to try and break the dog of the habit

Is the dog geting enough exerise & mental stimulation as this sounds a little like a bored dog entertaining itself & obsessing over it as it's such great fun when it dose happen.
As well as making sure the dogs body & mind is well used daily I would lock her/him inside a part of the house the the yard can't be seen from or crate her at an an hr each dawn & dusk. This is when the possums are most likely to appear & by them appearing her obsessive behavour is rewarded, which is conditioning the dogs to wait as it may pay off.

Had the exact same problem with Bindy. Tried similar tactics as CD suggests, but her new found toy was was all she wanted.

Her barking at the possum was driving the neighbours & us nuts .

She destroyed the garden under the tree.

Problem solved when possum got the s h i t s with her noise & moved on one night

Weird thing was also had a labrador, but he took little interets in the possum.

The dog gets plenty of exercise gets walked every day we also have him inside at the end of each day but it tends to still just stare out the window. We try to keep it entertained but it tends to as soon as we stop go back to searching for the possum or looking out the window

A blind, curtain to cover the window? Some decorative contact to the level the dog can see out of? Ummmmmmmmmmm. Just thinking of my usual quick fix to a situation that bugs me.

Get a crate & crate train the dog as crates are easily covered with a sheet if needs be.
What type of exercise & mental stimulation dose the dog get? As being mix of a spaniel & poodle you most likely have an extremely prey driven & super smart dog. My Poodles need more than just a walk but have to have some sort of exercise where they use their minds as well. We do treat finding, find & bring said item to handler, sheep herding & basic obedaince, I am hoping to start flyball with them soon too.
I would use a room like the laundry with any windows well covered & put the dog there everytime it even looks like starting possum hunting for 10 mins. You have to be very very consistant & have patience it dosn't happen over night.

Sorry, but I prefer the quick fix lol.
Mine pack and run off, am not going to do more recall training as when they are together the herding instinct over runs all.
Do agree though that crate training or laundry would work too.

I tend to think along the lines of what helps the dog and me too in a situation and I aim for win/win.

    Di,
I was talking about the op's dog.
My Pearl has shocking recall no matter what I seem to do, everyone else is good though.

I will try out the laundry idea as my house has a lot of glass windows and doors that would make it difficult to cover off them all
