    Default Strange Behaviour

I adopted a standard poodle on Boxing day that came from a breeder who neglected all of his dogs. They were never handled, socialized, clipped, were starved and the RSPCA ordered their surrender.
My lovely boy has come a long way, but he has one strange behaviour. When he is in the family room with us, we cant go near him, unlike in the bedroom where he cant wait to sail onto our bed, and when I come home from work he is all over me, outside. He is now one of 4 dogs and copies a great deal from my spoodle, who is his best mate. But this strange habit has me stumped. He is 11 months old, and very smart.Has anyone ever had a similar problem?

    Hi Ned,

I am so sorry this little fellow has had such a terrible time, you are really wonderful in adopting such a special, deserving boy.

Are you able to share further details in regard to his behaviour in the family room?

Is he is sitting in his bed or a particular place in the family room that he may be guarding or feel teritorial about? or does this all take place randomly/on the couch etc?

One thing that might help your poodle Ned is if you take something from your bedroom and put it in the family room - say a blanket from the bed or a pillow.

If the bedroom items have a smell and he notices it, he might feel calmer because he might think he is actually in the bedroom.

Sometimes just smells can help a dog feel at ease, if you took a blanket and a few pillows into the family room and he was ok, you could slowly take out one item at a time (say over a few weeks) and eventually he might become more comfortable with being in the family room.

Hope that helps a little, good luck (and well done for adopting a dog in need )
