Thread: Barking on Walks Help!

  1. Unhappy Barking on Walks Help!

    Hi,
I have 2 little dogs. Our older dog is about 5yrs and the other is a 6 month old puppy. They were both living with my parents up until recent where they were never walked much.
I am trying to walk them now as they are alone a lot more but my older dog barks at every dog that goes past. She has always been vocal and protective but it looks very vicious and it makes me so upset as she isn't a nasty dog.
I struggle to control her and can not get her to stop barking for the life of me. I am forever apologising to people and I nearly want to cry when I get home.
I recently bought a soft material muzzle which helps a little bit but she is still barking.
I want to be able to take them out more.
    HELP!

You need to start a desensitisation program with her. It is a slow process but it will work.
what you do: Get her fav treat. Every time anothe dog enters the far reaches of her awearness give her a treat. It is improtant that you do not have any other dogs close enough that she feels the need to bark. If she is quiet then treat. eventually you can let her get closer to other dogs, and again while she is quiet get her attention and treat. Each time you feel she is up to going closer move her on. AS SOON and she tences amd feels like barking turn her around and take her back to a distance she feels comfortable at. Like everything training this needs to be worked on a little each day, do not push her too far too fast. Keep doing this and she will learn that other dogs is a good thing.

If I have not made all that much attention let me know and I will have another go when I get home from work

If you seek understanding listen to the music, not the song.

    Thanks!!
It's definitely the neeed for desensitising.
It will be a slow process I'm sure so I'll let you know how it goes.
I was madly trying to get her to walk past all these dogs and she was obviously feeling they were way too close.
I love her so much so I hope I can get this to work!
