Default Some Questions About Tricks :)

Me and my family have been teaching Mollie tricks.

So far, the most successful have been "SIT", LIE DOWN", "COME" && "GO AROUND"
She also knows "STAY" and "ROLL OVER".
But I have some questions, as to whether I am doing it right..

Q1) When I say "Mollie, Lie Down" she doesnt lie down unless I kneel down and put my hand on the ground. It seems she is "LYING down" for the signal and not the actual word. How can I teach her to lie down when I say JUST the command, when I am standing up?

Q2) STAY - This was the 2nd trick we taught her, but she still doesnt seem to get it. When I train her withOUT treats, she will stay for a few steps, but then come. How do I teach her to stay properly?

I really want her to understand these basic tricks before I finish teaching her "ROLL OVER". I really want to be on the right track with her <33

    Demi,

Alot of dogs understand hand signals better than spoken commands. Mollie may be one of them. Just make sure you say your command word at the exact moment she does what you want.

Can't help you much with stay as mine do the same as Mollie. We're starting obedience classes next weekend though.

With regard to Q1. I would firstly suggest you just use the word "down" and make it quite an firm sound. Dogs do not understand words, as such, they hear sounds and "lie down" might not sound as obvious to her as 'down' would.

The puppy school I went to, wanted us to use 'drop' for the lie down command as they said it had a better sound for the dog but I just couldn't get used to it, having used 'down' for 5 years with my previous dog.

Having said all that Jenna STILL will not always go 'down' without a hand signal and she is 8 months old. I guess some dogs just don't 'get it' as quick as others.

Good luck and remember she's only very young, just keep up small amounts of practice each and every day. She'll get there.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I make sure to practice every day with her
I am not teaching any new ones though until I know for sure she understands the words, etc.
She definately has "sit", "go around" && "lie down" (with the hand signal) good.
I need to practice her basically on the "come", "stay", "lie down" (without hand signal) && "rollover".
With rollover, I am just gently giving her a little push at the moment and then allowing her to follow the treat with her nose. She is getting better!
