Yeah he was but he's always peed inside at night. I limit water after a certain time and let him out before I go to bed. But he still pees inside.

I don't like the pee smell so I would contain him until he learns a new routine. He has so much freedom he can pee anywhere. Its one of those things you have to work out how you want it to be in your house. Most dogs won't pee where they sleep but thats not a problem for him as he can go somewhere else and pee.
It is up to you what the boundaries are. The crate training is valid and works well for many people. If you choose not to then you you will need to find another way.
One of the things that helped me was at 12 weeks old Maggie and i visited my sister whose dogs are all trained to go to pee just before the family goes to bed. My bil claps his hands and out they go. Maybe a routine like that would help to some extent.

    Hi K2BC

You let him out but does he actually pee?

I think Farrview is right though - he's got no idea that he's supposed to pee outside only because he gets to pee where he likes when you're not paying attention. You need to limit his travels at night to his bed.

Dogs do like crates. I have trouble keeping mine out of hers, she goes in there when she wants something, and for comfort during thunderstorms etc. And if I've got one set up at club training and she gets a bit frustrated - she will nick off and go in the crate. Or any crate that's open.

This is my dog and another dog - could not get either of them out of this crate.

PS if you really don't want to crate train... maybe a belly band dog diaper would be the answer... just for night time?

Male dog belly bands, washable female dog diapers, puppy, senior dogs

If I get another puppy he/she will be in a crate next to my bed at night. I can be a reassuring presence and know they won't pee anywhere else.
I failed at crate training but I didnt do it well, I would definitely crate train a peeing puppy. I can remember a lab x that took 6 months and made biiiig puddles by then.
I think I was less diligent as Maggie was trained by 12 weeks old by the grumpy bitch at my sisters. But some dogs have little bladders and do pee more.
There is no easy solution except vigilance and patience. if they pee inside it is because they could.

If he's always done it he's not house trained. He thinks peeing inside is OK to do so he does it. You need to limit his access to places to pee so either borrow a crate/carrier and crate train him or put him somewhere where the peeing is cleanable. If you can't limit access or watch him it's never going to work.
