I think when you start the swap or the give/geddit games - the thing you have needs to be something the dog wants more than what it has... but eventually the game of swap itself becomes the thing that is fun or most rewarding for the dog.

At one point my hound would go through the hedge around the park to retrieve all the stray balls from the local sports club training sessions and hand them to me... And if I was pissed at the club (they often got angry with dogs and owners) - I'd let her chew them up a bit first. Otherwise, I'd put 10 to 20 mostly intact balls in their clubrooms each time we were out there.

I was just thinking wouldnt that encourage the dog to steal balls if it enjoyed the game of swap? I guess I like my dogs to understand when I dont like something and that this in itself has consequences and they need to recognise this. This is important when I work stock in particular. If I dont like something I tell them and stop them and they will then try and work out what I do want or I will show them. I generally try and anticipate a wrong reaction and redirect before it happens but this is not always possible.

Yes, if you get the rewarding wrong. My dog only got rewarded for balls she retrieved out of the hedge, or the ones I pointed her at, not for ones she stole...

That's the tricky thing about reward based training, if you reward a behaviour you really don't want... you will get more of it.
