    Default Advice

    Hello to all,
I'm after some advice on how to teach my 7 month old dog NJ
    how to stay.
    He knows how to:
come, sit, shake hands, lie down, roll over,
but i'm having trouble getting him to stay.
I say sit he sits. Then i say stay but as soon as i move he gets up.
    maybe i'm doing something wrong.
some advice on how to teach him to stay would be great.
    thank you
    cheers

Stay is an exercise that requires progression. I dont have time atm to type out a complete lesson but suffice it to say you need to start by stepping away sideways and back to the dogs side - reward/release, stepping backwards and abck - reward/release, stepping forwards and back - reward/release - that's how you teach stay. Once the dog can do all of those, you move to two steps - then three - etc etc and eventually the dog learns stay means dont move till i get back to you

Not wrong - just not working for your dog. Don't expect too much too soon

    occy,
After i read what you wrote i've
been trying the first bit of what you said, just one step sideways
so far thats going good. I'll keep doing that for a while then start to step backwards
NJ picks things up pretty quickly, just the way i was doing it must of been confusing him.
thank you so much for your help
    cheers

Just remember to take it slowly - dogs learn quickly, but repitition is the key to retention

I forgot - there is an equation that you need to use for teaching stay

    + time = - distance

    + distance = - time

Simply put - as you increase the distance, decrease the time and vice versa - that way you build both up over time
