    Default Stealing the laundry...

Lately Juda has developed this annoying habit of stealing the laundry... literally! No matter how high we put the laundry basket she will go to all sorts of lengths to get it ( she has been caught climbing on top of the washing machine). She usually does it when no one is home, which is leading me to think that maybe she is missing us and that because the laundry has our smell on it, that's why she wants it? I would really like some suggestions that I could try, I have tried leaving a blanket out there for her with our smell, but it's just too hot up here at the moment for her to be laying on that. Thanks guys

I know this may sound stupid, because it's the most obvious solution to me, but are you able to shut her out of the laundry?

Do you know if she goes for the washing basket as soon as you leave or is it later in the afternoon? If it's pretty soon after you leave then it is more likely to be due to separation, whereas if it's later in the day then it is more likely due to boredom.

Has she been exercised before you leave in the morning?
Does she have interactive toys to play with while you're out of the house?
    How old is Luda now?
Does she normally have separation related behaviour, before she started stealing washing?
Has she always had access to the washing?
Has something changed in your life recently? Longer work hours, moved house, new visitors staying, work men working at your house or in the neighbourhood, someone in the house is sick, bad weather (I see you're in QLD), etc.

You could always sleep with a dog blanket/bed for a while and then give it to her so it smells like you

Judging from the multiple posts on Dogshaming about dogs stealing laundry, I reckon it's a pretty common issue. My advice would be: put the laundry basket in another room and shut the door when you go out. Does she chew the laundry?

Socks and undies, but particularly socks are a favourite here.
The dawgs here have cow hooves, chew toys etc but nothing else has the aroma of a sock.
We have just learned to keep doors closed and washing confined to places of safety.

The Laundry is external so no, we can't shut her out. And it's usually after a couples of hours MAX after I leave.

She is excersised every morning and every afternoon.
She has 3 toys to play with plus another dog.
    She is 7 months old.
She will whine at the back door or gate when I go to leave and pace back and forth.
Yes, she has always had access to it.
And yes, I have picked up a few more hours during the past few weeks and we had just had a spell of bad weather, however now the weather is fine.

I might have to sleep with the dog blanket :P

She won't chew the laundry, just lay on it, which I guess is a good thing... except for when it's just come off the line :/

Erm... maybe this sounds stupid. But does it matter? If she isn't chewing it, why does it matter if she likes sleeping on it. It's going to be washed anyway and it seems to provide her with some comfort and security while you're away. If she is only 7 months she may grow out of it. At that stage our dog was still stealing my slippers. Sometimes chewing them - but mostly he just carried them around during the day and used them as a pillow. By the time he was 2, he had completely grown out of it.

hehe, yes try sleeping with the blanket for a while to get your smell on it

It is definitely good that she isn't chewing it. Does she play with the other dog?

Does she know your routine in the morning? Does she pick up on the things you do to get ready to leave . put on shoes/jacket, grab handbag/keys from usual spot, etc. You could try changing up the routine or desensitising her to the routine. Eg, picking up your bag but then moving it somewhere else, put on your work clothes then take them off again. Make her see those behaviours as just things you do in the house, not behaviours that predict your departure.

Is it just socks or does she take everything?
