Thread: Immunisation

  1. #1

    Default Immunisation

Just wondering if anyone knows whether dogs rescued from pounds are immunised? Or is that up to the rescue organisation?

I'm not sure about pounds, I suppose it would be up to the individual council's to make that decision, so it is best to contact your's and check. The RSPCA, Animal Welfare League and most (if not all) rescue organisations would make sure all vaccinations are up to date.

Yes, the RSPCA and AWL are really careful, as they know that the implications of un-immunised dogs and parvo in those situations is too awful to think about. Hopefully pounds and other places are as careful.

I just checked on my local councils website and when they sell dogs they are all:

    desexed
    temperament tested
    health checked (by Council Veterinarian)
    microchipped
    wormed
    vaccinated (first needle)
    heartworm tested (dogs only)
    hydrobathed (dogs only) and
have free registration until 30 June (cats and dogs).

Which is great. I would say that this would be a normal thing around the country.

Our local pound does nothing - it is totally up to the Rescue .

    This our local pound's policy:
"Sale price includes vaccination, micro chiping and registrations plus the sale price. Sexually entire dogs sale price includes a voucher to have the dog de-sexed at the RSPCA."

Does anyone know at what stage this happens? The dogs kept for a while to see if they are picked up, then evaluated for re-salability I guess... at what point are they given a vet check/immunisation etc?

It would be before they are put up for adoption.

The rescue should have provided you with a vaccination certificate. Contact the rescue and ask them.

I haven't actually adopted a dog. I've just had an experience that is making me look into how these things work. I'm really grateful that people can share their knowledge.
