Hey you cant adopt a greyhound for free through a GAP program although i would be able to find you a retired greyhound that would be free although it wouldnt have been through the same process as the GAP dogs.

The cost when i adopted a greyhound was $200 that included a coat, worming tablets for a few months and a special collar so i was happy to pay cause they do a great job.

Hey Cate. There was one at the ACT RSPCA not too long ago... I can't see her on the website anymore but it may be worth keeping an eye out on there. You can also try contacting your local greyhound racing club and maybe putting a notice in their newsletter.

In fact there are a couple of Greyhounds at the moment on the following site:

    adoptapet

They're not free but desexed etc. It may be somewhere to start looking!

In Victoria, the GAP (Greyhound Apoption Program) website is gap.grv.org.au. Their dogs are $200 and are desexed, microchipped, vaccinated etc. There is a links page for other state's adoption programs.
I encourage you to get a greyhound, they're fabulous pets!

    Hi all,

Just signed up after finding this topic, and can confirm that greyhounds are fabulous pets.
They’re very gentle, and sometimes it even looks like they’re smiling.
We got ours from Friends of the Hound in northern NSW for $185 four years ago.
She died two weeks ago at the age of 6 from an illness that has the vets and specialists baffled.
First there was talk of stomach cancer, then of Crohn’s disease, we still don’t know.
We are now fostering another greyhound.
She hasn’t barked once in the one week that we’ve had her.
We got told that she only barks when the birds are taking her food.

I love my greyhounds! They are cuddly and so lovable!

Also, clean and polite - they fit in very well - even in a "designer" home!
