    Default Compulsive licking

So my little Chopper dog is a licker. He loves to give you a playful lick or three whenever he gets the opportunity. Not a real problem.

He does, on the other hand, love to lick "stuff". The couch, the doona, the wall, the car seat, blankets, etc. Sometimes when we are watching tele, he will just sit between us and lick the couch for like 10 minutes. When he is doing it, he gets this kind of dreamy look in his eyes, like it is comforting, and almost about to put him to sleep. Sometimes it does put him to sleep!

He never licks himself obsessively, he doesn't have any skin conditions, he's not anxious, and although my couch sometimes has food on it, my house is mostly clean! Does anyone have any ideas about why he does this, or ever had a dog that does this too?

My pup will occasionally lick while he's settled, like if I have him up on the couch, he'll lick my arm for a while, or my leg or whatever's in front of his mouth. I can't say I've noticed him licking random objects or furniture though.

Frosty likes to lick my brother. She gets such a good reaction from him. I know how it feels cos I like to stick an iceblock along the gap between his shorts and his t-shirt if he's not careful (big sister's fun).

I think if you don't care if your dog licks compulsively - then leave it be. It's pretty harmless, and you don't know what they'll substitute instead to appease their compulsions. But if licking the furniture is not ok, maybe have some toy or thing you're ok with him licking - and give him that to lick instead if he starts on the furniture. Or you can just train and reward something else - like sitting on the mat, or going in the crate. My dog finds both of those comforting, possibly because she's had so many treats for going there.

There was an episode of "me or the dog" that had a licker - this dog was peeling paint the licking was so bad. I think Victoria just did distract and displace ie OI (or bah) and here do this instead...

    Yes.
    My Tonka boy

We feel it stems in part from his Pica and part from his anxiety levels ie ; its a comfort thing ( which also can stem from the Pica lol )

    Tonk is a serial licker!
When he was in the kennels , the cage doors etc? The taps? The beds legs? You name it,it was fair game.
Now he's out of that enviroment he has settled again but will still happily lay there and lick my feet for a good 20 minutes .

I dont have a problem with it as he is not harming himself.

    How old is your boy?
Did you get him from a breeder?

He's about to turn one, and no - he's a rescue. I know very little about his history.

His licking doesn't bother me much, and I'd rather he lick "stuff" than lick me! It is so methodical though, almost hypnotic to watch!

Thought he might of been a rescue .... he may have picked up the habit as a calming mechanism when he was younger. He may not appear nervous or anxious to you but my bet is he does in fact have some anxiety there.

And yes! It is very methodical! I've got to a stage where I quite like it when he licks my feet now lol!

my mum loves having her feet licked - the Aussie terror used to do a good job. I can't stand it. Well I can stand it only if I tune out and think of something else. Dog doesn't get the chance.

I'm thinking maybe D-Dog could get something else for dog to lick like a kong or one of those new soft frisbee things, or a plate - that could be his plate - or a dedicated soft toy or cushion so only one thing gets licky menky.
