Thread: Black hawk dry food

    Hi Sean,

It's about getting past the marketing.

After all my research I decided on Nutro. Besides the fact it has a nice simple ingredients list without wheat, rye or any of those trendy, extraneous ingredients, I like the sources of & high levels of Omegas. My dogs do extremely well on it.

The major decider though is that it is Australian made with all Australian ingredients (confirmed this with the company) in a dedicated manufacturing facility. Evo, Innova, Black Hawk, etc are manufactured in shared facilities where quality control is not within their control. All the recent recalls by Diamond (Evo, Innova) for salmonella highlight the importance of this.

After talking to lots of people that have used Black Hawk some were told that they had at least one questionable batch that made lots of dogs sick. I was told by a couple of these people this was confirmed by the owner.

So in my experience it is more than just the ingredients that are important.

Thanks for getting back to us Steal Dove, I do love an update.

So they didn't explain how they came to be using a dead doctor's recipe? I doubt they'd want to tell you the recipe exactly. But they should have been able to discuss the quality of their ingredients or something like that.

    dedicated manufacturing facility.
It's dedicated to manufacturing pet food. Not sure it would be dedicated to manufacturing Nutro - given that Mars also make Advance and Pedigree and etc.

How does a shared manufacturing site contribute to salmonella? The only way I could see that being minimised apart from excellent hygiene and cleanup which we'd expect, is no poultry and Nutro does several varieties of poultry based dog food.

    Hi Hyacinth,
The facility is dedicated to Nutro and not the other brands.
It's a cross contamination issue in shared facilities as is what happened with Diamond in the US.

I still feed my dog black hawk.

Got no reason to change at the moment. It's still cheaper than nutro and no poop problems.

I still feed her the home made casserole as well.

I recently found some green plastic in one of the black hawk kibble bits but only one. It's a wee bit scary - I keep thinking I should mail that bit of kibble back to them. But Evil Hound eats a fair bit of plastic anyway. Loves rubber balloons and pegs...
