Default Shar pei with swollen liver.

    Hi everyone,

My cousin recently adopted a one year old shar pei. She came in pretty bad health so she took her to the vet, turns out she has a swollen liver and she doesn't know what to do. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas or advice?

The second image is of her legs which have huge lumps on them, i think she is gonna get them removed. The main issue is the liver.

They just told her to come back in two weeks to see how she goes, because the day she got her the day she took her and the vet wanted to get a report on what was normal for her.

There isn't much that we can advise. I think there are a couple of vet nurses here but there is so little information to go on.
Any word on what the lumps could be?
I think you will just have to wait and see if the vet does tests and what the results are for them.
I think it is great that your friend took on this rescue pei.

Has the dog had blood taken to check liver function and probably kidneys/thyroid should be checked too.

Swollen liver is not really a diagnosis. A liver can "swell" ( which is realy enlargement) due several different underlying diseases. Cancer being one....But Liver cancers are often secondary to a primary cancer somewhere else.

Liver failure also can be a secondary to many non-cancer diseases.......Whichever way you go, often not good.

When you touch the dog in the abdominal area, does it feel fluid like........because ascites, extra fluid around the liver and bowel are can be there too, Which is not liver swelling, but fluid made by the body, because of some underlying cause.

It is really good of your friend to take on this dog...i hope the outcome is a little more positive. The dog does seem to carry some extra weight, is she desexed?

Yeah we are hoping it's nothing too serious, the dog is actually underweight. she is about 17kgs when she is meant to be 22kgs. I think the lumps are just from past wounds that have been unattended to. She lived on a farm and the owners clearly didn't care to much about her, she did have a skin condition too but she is looking alot better witha good diet.

EDIT - No she is not desexed and we aren't sure if she is pregnant yet. My cousin finds out next vet visit.

Lumps of skin like that are pretty common in peis, they look pretty normal. If they look inflamed or sore it is probaby just due to poor diet/skin irritation which they are also prone to.

Inflamed liver is a hepatitis and can be caused by many things. If they vet has adopted a wait and see approach go with that. But a dog equivalent of a "detox" diet may be of assistance. Remove all commercial foods and go back to a raw meat/bones with some vegetable matter, and some fish a couple of times a week.

Raw grated carrot is a great additive to boost immune system and detox for dogs. Works wonders on bad breath too!!
