Thread: Heartworm/tick/flea and Intestinal Worm Product?

  1. #1

Default Heartworm/tick/flea and Intestinal Worm Product?

Is there 1 product that does it all?
Advocate does flea/heartworm and intestinal worms but not ticks.
Advantix does flea/tick but not heart or worms
Frontline plus does flea/tick but not heart/worms
Interceptor does heartworm/worms but not flea/ticks.

Is there any one product that covers everything??

Sentinel Spectrum does it all but ticks. I use interceptor and have preventic tick collars for mine (we don't have flea issues).

Nope. The cheapest combination for me is Preventic collar, Advantix once every 2 weeks, and an Interceptor Spectrum tablet once a month. Sentinel is twice the price of Interceptor and the only difference is it doesn't do fleas. Advantix and the tick collar take care of that part. When you have 4 dogs a few dollars can make a difference.

    What she said.

Preventix Tick Collars are the cheapest and IMO best tick prevention, regardless of price, if you live in a high tick prone area.

And nothing beats a thorough tick check twice a day. That is the only way to make sure your dog has no ticks; no product is 100% effective!

I hadn't heard of the Preventic collar. And now I have a question. We don't get ticks in our area but there are heaps at the coast where we go camping sometimes. When they say it lasts for 2 months, does that mean 2 months out of the packet? So if I only put it on when we go to the coast and then take it off again, I'd still have to buy another one to use for holidays after 2 months? Or will they keep longer if not on the animal?

I get a six month pack of Revolution from the vet, which includes heart worm and comes with canex tablets for intestinal worms including tape worm.

But it doesn't cover ticks. I got proban tablets for when I was travelling to a tick area with the dog. She didn't get any but I checked too.

I'd put it back in the pouch and use it next time provided it was within the two month period. But then I can normally purchase them for between $9 & $12.00 so it's very cheap and effective tick protection.

I'd also put it on my dog a good 24 hours before going to the tick area. The particles from the collar must work thru the coat.

I live in a high tick area and my Gordon Setter wears one. All the time she's worn one I've never found a tick on her, which is why I recommend them. Every other product on the market I would still be pulling ticks off her, or the tick would attach for a while then die - no good if multiple ticks are attaching.

Normal patting of the dogs just doesn't happen here that's an opportunity to do a down to the skin massage and tick search. The dogs love it.

My vet says in his old practice their highest tick day was a Thursday because dogs had gone away over the weekend with owners to tick areas and come Thursday symptoms were very evident. Here everyday is tick day.

We don't get fleas, never have. I suppose treating for ticks we've eliminated them.

Yep, I have never had a tick using the preventic collars either. They have been great!

I would do as MAC said, put it back in the pouch and maybe in a snap lock bag. You should be able to use it again after that. Also the pack says if the dog gets wet it won't work for a 24hr period after that - something to be aware of if you plan to go swimming!

and I have just discovered a new thing called Panoramis which is a chew and does everything except Ticks... so the same as Advocate but a chew instead of a spot on.
