    Default Heat and De-sexing

    Hi,

I was wondering if someone could help, i have a 15 month old puppy and she has just started her second heat season. Can dogs be de-sexed while in the heat period or do i need to wait until she is finished and then get her de-sexed??

    thanks for your help!

It can be done but is much more complicated surgery with greater risk to the bitch. About 6 weeks after the end of her season would be ideal.

Hemorraging is common with bitches undergoing desexing whilst in season. The uterine stump also tends to bleed for some time afterwards. Most Vets will refuse to desex a bitch in season due to these risks.

Your vet can give her an injection to end the heat early - within about three days instead of three weeks. You can then desex her afterwards. If you get an injection to end it you can make the desexing appoinment at the same time.

During heat the blood supply to the uterus is much increased in preparation for pregnancy, that is why the risk is increased.
