    Default Huge Lump on Lip

Milo has a huge lump on his left corner of his lip. When I press on it from the outside, he doesn't look like he's in pain. From the inside, the flesh doesn't look red. It's still pink. But, I cannot be certain of this as I only could get a quick glance. It's not ridiculously hard, quite squishy. He's not lethargic, depressed, drowsy, uncoordinated. He's quite happy to chew on his rope toy, and quite energetic as usual. He doesn't seem any different apart from the lump. There's no rashes that I can see.

He hasn't had his dinner yet, but he's eaten 2 puppy biscuits so far that is KNOWN. Not sure if any neighbours have fed him anything, though I don't think so.

My dad thinks it's an insect bite which will heal in time so he doesn't think it's necessary to take him to the vet. I know for some things, the bodies immune system is enough to fight whatever it is. But since it's unknown what cause it, I don't know if antibiotics are needed.

It slightly extends under his chin, and if dogs also have lymph nodes behind the chin like humans, then I'm worried it may affect his lymphatic system.

I haven't called the vet on the emergency line as I want some advice before I do so.

My dad said to let him eat his dinner and see if there are any complications then. He's having 2 chicken drumsticks, beef mince, organic yoghurt and spinach tonight. Will this affect healing?

EDIT: According to my dad when he walked him this morning, there was no swellings. When I came home at 6pm, is when I noticed the swelling. Mum let him in the house beforehand but didn't take notice of his mouth (not saying it wasn't there before already).

I'de probably head off the the vet. Unexplained lumps always concern me.
Could just be a bite of some sort seeing as it came on so suddenly. If you can't get to the vet tonight, maybe just keep an eye on it over night and if nothing has improved in the morning head to the vet.

Personally if it was me I would be calling the vet it could be anything from the sounds of it, a tooth abscess is what I thought when I first saw your pics, maybe you could ring the vet and ask what they think? I know mine is happy to take calls for urgent advice as long as they aren't to late in the day.

Only you can know really, but if it were my dog and she was happy and eating, I probably would wait and see for a little while. Though it is also possible that curiosity would get the better of me.

If you can call the vet to ask advice, that's always good.

ETA: I can't say I've ever seen an insect bit that big. I had a suspected spider bite once that made half of my shin swell up. But it was not a lump like that, the swelling spread over a much larger area.

Am thinking possible abscess due to a grass seed.

My thoughts are wasp, bee, or green ant sting. If it's either it should reduce in 24 hrs.

Fwiw this is what I would do, if the swelling is still up in 24 hrs a vet check would be a good idea as antihistamines could be given to reduce the swelling, or other reasons like absess etc could be diagnosed.

Yeah that's true actually. Abbie was bitten by an insect on her face a few months ago. The swelling looked very different to milo's. It was spread over a larger area and looked more like swelling rather than an actual round lump. I've been doing some reading about abscesses over the past day and that does look like one..

    Thanks for the replies guys!

I did a physical check around his gums and it seemed to be more on the cheek flesh than the gums and teeth.

The swelling on the side has reduced quite a bit now, but still visible that there is a swelling. The swelling under the jaw is still quite prominent, but I'll keep an eye on him tonight.

Signs of healing are visible... but I am quite curious as to what caused it lol. I watched him eat his entire meal today, and he didn't seem to have a problem crunching bones on the swollen side. He's chasing balls, tugging ropes and chewing his kong as usual - it's as if he doesn't realise he has a swelling on his face...

If it worsens tomorrow I'll take him to the vet which would be on my way to dog training!

Thinking of the worst would be the swelling reaches his airways and blocks it... Touch wood!

if you've got some zirtec antihistimene, a piece of tablet proportional to the size of the dog vs the size of a child/adult dose is supposed to be ok (do some googling).

And if that makes no difference, then I think it could be the grass seed abscess thingy. Which won't go away by itself. Well it might burst out on a sea of puss but what you don't want is it sealed in a huge lump of hard scar tissue.

Just updating... The lump on both the cheek and chin have completely disappeared. My mum thinks it's because she accidentally wacked the laundry basket into his head yesterday.

He looks and behaves like normal so far. I don't think it's anything major anymore.
