I hope Lilly is going well and has a quick recovery. We are currently recovering from just one cruciate tear on the left hind after TTA. I wonder are you going to have the 2 repaired at the same time?

My vet told me that something like 40% of dogs that have onside tear will have the same on the opposite side within 3 - 4 yrs. That's when I checked the Insurance policy and found that they only cover one procedure as it is a 'Bilateral Condition".I would be interested to hear what the outcome is with your insurance.

In the meantime Good Luck and Best Wishes
    Hey there,

Lilly has already had her right leg done, it was done nearly 10 weeks ago. She had a complete bilateral cruciate rupture in both legs within 3 weeks of each other so her left leg was already blown when the right one was operated on. We got a pre-approval for both legs at the same time. The first leg has been paid out.

Boof at this stage has only blown his right leg, but as the left leg is completely separate joint, it would also be covered at a separate occasion, the bilateral refers to the ligaments in the individual knees. The injury to each knee is independant of the other knee if that makes sense. They would only ever cover one procedure on one knee, if one cruciate in the knee goes and you have a procedure for that, if the other ligament were to go, they wouldn't cover a procedure for it.

This diagram shows you the posterior and anterior ligaments, when both go it's called a bilateral rupture, but one can go without the other going.

I have just spoken to OH bout the appt with them, Lilly definately has a bilateral rupture in the left, but they think Boof may only have a single rupture, their xrays will confirm, either way it will be surgery for them both!

    Hey guys,

Well they are home and settling into g'ma n pop's before we head off to bathurst.

Boof's operation went without a hitch, his recovery was a lil shaky to start, he wasn't peeing well but blood tests showed his kidneys were fine and now his urine is great in colour and he's using his leg and all is wonderful.

Lilly had a hiccup, the surgeon nicked an artery while cutting the tibia which resulted in her losing about as much blood as she would if she was donating for a transfusion, however, due to losing it so quickly and the evasive measure to stop it, there was a lot more trauma to the surgery site than normal and they gave her a blood transfusion for safety's sake, as she was under anesthetic when she lost it. As a result we haven't been able to start her on any anti inflammatories until today so the poor girl has a very swollen n sore leg that she isn't really impressed by having to put weight on so she doesn't really. The joint feels fine and she allows the physio to be performed and it's painless so it is muscle soreness not the joint that is giving her grief. It's also very stable. We should see slow improvement in the coming days.

    I'll post a pic soon.
    Cheers Aleesha
