Default Sasha Has Gone Off Dry Food :/

    Hi guys,

thread is pretty self explanatory.. Sasha has completely gone off dry food and as its been said alot that alot or even most of the nutrition is in the dry food it worries me a bit.

Sasha is being fed, as per instruction of the breeder when we got her, pet mince for breaky mixed with her dry food (which she so talently leaves behind in the bowl, almost like she spits them out as they are very well mixed in), chicken necks for lunch, and half a tin of chum with her biscuits mixed in which again she leaves behind in the bowl. Breeder had told us when we got her that her dry food needs to be soaked in warm water, which in the beginning yes she did eat that with a side bowl of her pet mince. now that she is refusing to eat the dry food soaked i have tried mixing it in with her food and she still wants nothing to do with it. the only "dry" food i can get her to eat i the dog biscuits that are shaped like a bone the size of ones palm. She munches them.

Any suggestions and please i dont have $100 to spend on a bag of dry food...

Also every 2nd or 3rd day she has a lamb shank, and gets roo tail bones here and there throughout the week.

Why does it need to be soaked in water? o.O

How old is she? That sounds like a lot of food in one day. Most dogs only get fed once or maybe twice a day (with a light breakfast and then dinner).

She is seven months. Breeder has assured me to still be feeding her this amount, and her "meals" are not big in any aspect. I am not sure about the soaking in water but i have not done this for around 3 weeks anyway. but still she wants nothing to do with it. Her pet mince is only around 100g in the morning, she has around 3 chicken necks midday and half the "smaller" can of chum for dinner. with her dry food mixed in breakfast and dinner but not a great amount, however she still refuses to touch it.

Erk! First of all, toss the Chum! It's useless; there's nothing nutritious in it. It's like Maccas for dogs. What brand is the dry food? I hate to say it, but the quality of it could be what's putting her off (or that it's soaked? Generally food is only soaked while a pup is young and the teeth are still forming. How old is she?).

You don't have to spend a fortune to feed a dog well. If you're already feeding her partly raw, why not make her diet 3/4 raw, and 1/4 dry? Think about it: dry food is like weetbix. You wouldn't want to have it almost every meal. Dogs need variety in their diets, just like us.

I suggest giving her something for breakfast like a chicken drumstick/neck/wing, and then skipping lunch (unless she's under 6 months in which case 3 x a day is a good idea), and then giving her roo or beef mince for dinner, mixed in with vegies, rice, pasta or something of the like. Alternate the mince with egg, fish and bones. I feed my 4 for less than $20 a week using this method.

And she is in the weight range that she should be in. breeder says she should now be between 10 and 12 kilos, (she wanted to know her weight to see if it was right for the show, and right for her health of course), and she is 10.2, so i would not say she is "overfed".

I never liked the idea of the chum but this is what she was brought up on so i just stuck to it. So your saying to just toss the chum and use more pet mince???

Well I am a RAW feeder, so not much help. I hate the thought of all the preservatives in all that food.........Is the food too boring for your dog?

If your dog is in good weight, I would just take away the food she left after 15 minutes.
Not feed any more in quantity of the stuff she likes. Eventually she will be hungry enough and eat it all again.......Maybe

If she is lean and needs to eat.........

Maybe adding something to it. like some cheap sardines in oil. I have also added cottage cheese to some fussy eaters I have looked after. Sardines and cottage cheese is very sticky, so she won't be able to separate it. Good luck

Oh and orginally of course to go with the chum they had her on that dry food also. I have also tried pedigree and supercoat. none of which she is interested in. :/

If you want to give her something like chum, buy Nutro wet food or some of the puppy loaf you can get from the supermarket. Pedigree, Supercoat and all of the brands you find in the supermarket dry dog food section is junk.
