Default What Should I Feed Pup?

    Hi All

I own a staffy x. He is currently 19 weeks old and I've been thinking quite a lot lately about what i would be best feeding him. I have normally been feeding him a cup of Eukanuba large breed puppy kibble, along with a slice of puppy Tuckertime, with some rice mixed through. He gets this for breakfast and dinner. This is what he was on when we purchased him so i never really questioned it. He also gets chicken wings and beef bones most days.

His poo's have always been on the loose side, but last week he had very bad diarrhea. I switched him onto cooked chicken breast and rice and gave him that for about 4 days. Diarrhea went away and noticed he would only poo 1-2 times a day. On his usual diet he can sometimes go up to 4 times a day. I ran out of the chicken so started putting the kibble and Tuckertime back into his food, and this morning, back to sloppy mess!

I have spoken to the vet about putting him on a home cooked diet but she said this would not be enough to fulfill him of all the nutrients he needs. So i would love some suggestions on what you all think or what you feed your dogs??

He also seems like he is constantly itchy. He was gnawing away the fur on his leg at one stage but seems to have stopped this lately. I'm not so sure this is food related but thought that was worth mentioning as well.

There are quite a few posts re RAW and BARF diets (which is what we feed here).

Itch can be diet related- there are threads about this also if you scroll down.
Some say beef bones, others the grains in food. Best to try eliminate things and see if it gets better. you do need to eliminate for 2 weeks...

If you continue to feed kibble I would recommend a premium one like taste of the wild/eagepack/canidee etc which have more meat and less grains (corns/soy and other fillers).

re the poor flakey coat- do you give any fish oil? Try a capsule every couple of days. A tin of sardines once a week is a big help also.

Nutro, EaglePack Holistic, Innova/Evo - Very expensive, very good for the dogs coat, skin & stools.

My dog was on Innova/Evo for almost all of his first year - he started out on supercoat and it was good at first, then not so good. Unfortunately Innova/Evo is only available from Pet Goods Direct or Pets Paradise... I went to PGD for the lesser of two evils (no puppies or kittens sold there).

I have mine on Advance, mince, vegies and rice. I always use a premium food because 1 of mine has allergies. His skin reacts something shocking if I'm putting crappy food into him.
It might be worth having some allergy testing done??

Ugh... I wouldnt' touch Advance with a 100 foot pole... So many fillers and nowhere near enough goodness IMO!

I switched to Sentinel Yoghurt Plus after the first while on Innova (no puppy formula unfortunately) and Batty LOVES it.

My dog was fine on Advance for a while and then she was getting the runs every fortnight or so. I switched up, and she stopped getting runny poo.

The best dry dog food I know about but don't want to buy since it seems to be a USA import is Artemis.

You can use this website to learn how to evaluate your dog's dry food. It is based on the USA ingredients so some of the Australian made stuff is actually better. But if the ingredient list has stuff like sawdust listed first instead of "chicken" then it's not a great product (have a look at the supercoat list - sawdust would be better. However my dog loves the stuff, like teenagers love Maccas).

Thanks for the replies. It's so hard to know what the right thing to do is! everyone always has a different opinion.

I went into city farmers looking for the some of the suggested kibble but no luck. The lady there told me i should get Purina Pro Plan in the salmon flavour (which helps with allergies) but i figured purina wouldnt be any better than eukanuba. I hear better pet and garders stock eagle pack so im going to give that a go for a two week period.

Just wondering if i should put him on kibble only, or mix it in with chicken and rice still..

Purina is about the same as supercoat. Purina brand belongs to Nestles and Supercoat belongs to Mars. I think.

What ever you switch him over to, the usual process is to swap 1/4 by 1/4 eg feed him 1/4 new stuff and 3/4 old stuff the first meal, then half and half the meal after that, then mostly new stuff etc.

You won't get Artemis, or Eagle Pack or Innovo in a supermarket. And probably not a vet either. You need a specialised shop for dog food supplies. Google would be your friend.
