Thread: Pregnant Dog

    Default Pregnant Dog

    Hi everyone.

I have an 11.5 month old Labrador bitch.
She isn't spayed yet (and please.. I really don't need the third degree about why she isn't spayed yet.. There is a reason for it but I don't want to get into that, it's not what this thread is about) and I was sure she had already been through her first heat cycle. She was kept indoors at all times except potty breaks during this time. We had no visits at all from stray male dogs during this time.

About a month ago, I had to go out of town for a family emergency and I couldn't take her with me. A friend offered to watch her for me and being as she had no other dogs and she had a secure yard, I accepted her offer. I was away for two weeks.

It's now been a good two to three weeks since then and very recently I have seen signs of my dog perhaps being pregnant. Her teats are growing, which is the main indicator.
We have an appointment on Friday to have her checked out and we'll find out for sure then.
I asked my friend if there had been any dogs hanging around her house while she was watching my dog, and she said the only one that made a regular visit was the little male black maltese/shihzu from down the road.

The main reason for my post is, what should I expect if she IS pregnant? What should I do?
I am perfectly financially able to support a litter of puppies if there is to be one, and i'm not new to the concept (my father used to breed Curly Coated Retrievers and I was a big part of that), but my main concern is Chloe's health. She's only 11.5 months old so she's still a puppy herself.

I've been apart of breeding dogs for many years but i've never dealt with an unwanted pregnancy, nor a pregnancy in a dog so young.

What would be the best option for her? Are there increased risks of complications if she does birth this litter?
I'm sure my vet and I will discuss all of this on Friday but I just want to try to get some other opinions on what to expect and have a couple days to think so I can go in with a vague idea of what I want to do, instead of going in blind and sitting there for ages trying to take it all in.

    Thanks everyone..

Hi. I would be discussing if aborting would still be on the cards with the vet.

A bitch that I took on was too late to abort and I have a huge diary thread here that may help if this is the case with yours.

my friend has a female staffy and recently it went on its first heat and although it had no contact with another dog while on heat it looked very much like it was pregnant,

she was very concerned that maybe a dog had got to her or something and she took her to the vet, the vet stated that her dog would be ok just to feed premium food and at about 30 or 40 days take it for a ultra sound, turns out that she was having a phantom pregnancy but she got to the point of having milk and everything,

the vet reccomended that her dog not have an abrtion but every dog is different, i would do what my vet reccomends.

    goodluck

Yep, that's the one, all 39 or so pages of it. Pups are now almost 16 months old.
