Thread: What Do You Feed Your Dog and Why?

Smile What Do You Feed Your Dog and Why?

I feed my dog Science Diet. Give him dried liver as treats. He also gets the occasional bone.
Why do you feed your dog and why? I am curious to know what people feed their dogs. I still am not sure if what I am feeding Johnny is the best. So I want to know what everyone else does.

My dogs have RAW and i have been feeding RAW since forever (1980) before it was popular ....I did it, because my Dad fed his GSD's that way, he said it was natural and hated dog food.
We also are lucky enough to be able to get plenty of meat/bones/offal and we have our own veg garden. So most waste veg goes to the dogs as some fruit and it is so much cheaper to feed this way.
My dogs have always been very healthy, except for my newfie rescue girl who has a wheat and preservatives allergy. If you give her one coolie she breaks out. Or one crip chip. So that is another reason. I need to know what goes into her excactly

I, too, feed raw. Supplement with probiotics and fruit/veg/ grain pulp. Occasionally feed prepackaged BARF ( that's takeout night for the dogs ) and use small amounts of Eagle Pack Hollistic kibble.

I do it because thousands of years of digestive evolution suggests this is the most natural way to feed, and I feel comfortable knowing that I know exactly what goes in.

What is RAW? And is it expensive?

I seriously have no idea what to feed my dog. There is a lot of conflicting information out there about what is best.

If it was up to Johnny he would only eat cat food - he always steals kibble from their bowl when I let him through the house for walks. I have had to raise the food because he was starting to get more than he should. Naughty boy.

Cat food has a lot more fat in it than dog food which is why your dog likes it. Kitten kibble makes a great dog training treat. Little yummy pieces.

Note - some of these sites are from the USA and relate to USA ingredient lists which may be different to the same product manufacutured under licence locally in Australia, eg Nutro Natural Choice products

Personally I won't feed Hills - what is the first listed ingredient? Filler (something kin to sawdust) not meat.

I feed my dog so he will stay alive. lol.

Mine have supercoat dry on tap 24/7. They also get a raw bone daily or raw chicken wings, sometimes sardines for their coats and suitable table scraps.

Raw for me is; raw meaty bones fed daily, also a wet mix made up of meat mince (ie chicken or beef or kangaroo or venison meat minced) with egg, offal, Vets All Natural Complete Mix (for grains and roughage though this could also be made at home using pulped fruits and veggies), yoghurt (or Probiotic supplement) and a couple if other supplements- omega oil and a trace mineral powder. I also feed raw fish, or canned sardines once or twice per week.

The basic idea is nothing cooked. BARF stands for Biologically Approprite Raw Food and is like my mix above but prepackaged for convenience.

Mine is pretty much the same, I do vary it. I have also taught my dogs to eat Eagle holistic, the fishy one, in case of emergencies. No good if something happens and you have to ask for help to feed the dogs. Too difficult to ask friend to do what we do I keep it in our pantry (small bag 7kg)

I mix it up, whatever is on special is what they get.

This weeks menu includes raw lamb off-cuts, beef brisket bones and supercoat dry.
