    Default Hair Loss Problem

    Hi All,

My 4 yo kelpie, Dusty is currently losing her winter hair as probably most furry critters do around this time of year. She seems to be shedding more than usual and her coat doesn't have that shine and lustre that she normally has.

A few months ago we got a few chooks that free range all day and Dusty has taken a liking to chook poo.

Would anybody know if the ammonia and nitrogen in the chook poo could be the cause of the hair loss and also the lack of hair shine?

our beagle also eats the chook poo- we do not have any probs with his coat.
He eats a egg or 2 a week, some fish/sardines every week and the odd left over porridge- all good for the coat I believe. He also has a fish oil capsule once a week.

Thanks for the tips there sweetboy. I read about giving sardines somewhere else on the forum and have started her 1 tin a week as from today and I'll see how it goes.

Over the past few days I've been keeping an eye on her to see if she is eating anything else that she shouldn't be and sure enough, she has been sneaking into the chookhouse when she thought nobody could see her and getting stuck into the laying mash and grain. Had to build a flap on the chookhouse door today so chooks only can get in and out.

Hmmm, a shiny coat is sign of good health...
She hasn't lost any weight? No fleas?
We had a flea plague a few months ago and Lady lost a lot of fur from chewing and her coat went very dull.

Could be few things though I'm another who swears by the sardines

Getting into the chook house made me think of mites , any scratching etc like Myf asked ?
Does Deisel have any access to wombat holes etc ?

    Hi there ChoppaChop & Myf,

I fed Dusty a tin of sardines on Friday and a couple of eggs over the past 2 days and I can see the difference already - she is getting the shine back in her coat and when I ran the brush over her last night there didn't seem to be as much hair loss. Overall, she is a pretty healthy hound although carrying a little bit too much weight at the moment, but she usually does put a bit on during the winter months and then trims down during summer.

No fleas, no chook mites and no wombat holes.

Many thanks for your replies and comments.
