Dogs can get intestinal worms- woms that live in their gut.

They can get heartworm- this is spread (I think) via mozzi bites and the worms grow around the heartmuscle. The treatment is horrid (arsnic injected into the heart) and often fails.

Read the packaging of different products. They clearly state on the box what they cover. Some only protect against one type of intestinal worm, others 3 types of intestinal worms, and some only against heartworm but not intestinal worms, and some cover EVERYTHING.
Every product is different- so read the box.

Most need to be given EVERY MONTH, not just once in a while.

If you buy a wormer like Interceptor Spectrum from the vets...it covers all gut worms AND heart worm...normal all wormers doesn't usually cover heart worm

Um, the tablet she gives you is obviously an all-wormer tablet that does not cover protection against your dog developing heartworm. If it did, she wouldn't be suggesting you commence heartworm prevention in the first place.

How often do you go to your vet to get the worming tablet? I am asking because you need to worm your dog in regular intervals. I am a bit surprised about your vet. Before you start giving medication to protect your dog from heartworm he needs to be tested whether he is already infected or not (he can become infected via a mozzie bite). If he is infected and you start giving him a worming tablet that protects against heartworm he can die.

This link will give you some information about heartworm and what is available to prevent it Home-Heartworm Disease and Its Prevention

isnt there an injection you can get now from the vet that covers all wormies inc heart worm??????

even so with that gyps gets bimonthly doses of something or other that my OH administers apparently its used on cattle but he checked all the usage guides and parasitology is his area of expertise, i must say i have never seen a flea or a worm anywhere near her since he started using it =)
( its one of the mectins i think like ibermectin or abermectin) he says its what frontline and other brands use except he can get it for 50c instead of $90 because they buy in bulk for cattle (and adjust dosage accordingly for gyps)

(i dont condone people using any sort of treatment not specifically intended for dogs)

There is a yearly injection that covers heartworm but not the other worms.

i did some research on the tablet they give my dog, it only covers hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworm. those are just the intestinal worms right? and also when a product says for some dogs , for example for medium dogs from 10kg-25kg. does that mean how heavy the dog is now or when its full grown?
    sorry firstime dog owner

    Hi Laura 77,

Could you please add a bit more information on your post? I am very interested. I have been using sentinel+comfortis every month for almost 2 years. It has cost me $40+ for my two boys every month. Now I found out I can buy a higher dosage med with extra $1 per package and split between them. It will save some money. If you can provide further info, i will do some research on that. Thanks.
