    Talking Teeth

    Advice please!

I took Pedro for his vaccinations and check-up back in February (he'll be 2 some time in June/July) and the vet found some plaque on his teeth. His advice was to give him more bones.

Pedro's been on Science Diet dry food since I picked him up from the RSPCA a year ago but since January has been getting dry food in the morning and raw meaty bones or mince/veg concoction for tea...since the vet visit he's been getting less mince, more bones and his plaque has nearly cleared up.

Right now all he has is a ring of plaque round his incisors and I can't think how to get rid of it! When he eats it's mainly his side teeth that he uses for chewing, crunching bones or whatever....do I have to start brushing his teeth, or is there a better way?

Really want to nip this in the bud now, I'm kind of horrified I've let his teeth get bad before he's even 2!

Well, I wouldn't say you've 'let his teeth get bad' meegs, more his teeth have got to that stage from diet and lack of natural cleaners, that's all.

You can have the vet remove the left over plaque, and then keep an annual check on it each time you go in fo vaccinations or whatever...

Or you can remove it yourself. A good toothbrush, or even a cloth and wiping hard depending on the degree it has formed. I wouldn;'t suggest you use a tooth scaler unless you know how to use one for fear of injuring the dog's mouth, I'm sorry.

But sounds likethe bones have helped get rid of the majority of it, so that's great.

Yeah, lots of things on the market, but seriously, just a toothbrush. But not one of those super soft things we use for senstive gums etc.
Depending on how hard the plaque is, often just a darned good scrub with your finger wrapped around some moist wipes will help too. Might not remove it, but can loosen it to help removal easier as they chew.

    Lol @ Shar and Von.

Now when he can jump up to the basin and brush his own teeth, then I'll be impressed!
