Thread: Monthly Worming??/

    Default Monthly Worming??/

Okay, I know I have posted about this before and have gotten more knowledge about the different types of treatments available but please just indulge me one last time.

Poppy is due to be wormed/flea treated next weekend. I had been using Advocate AND Drontal as I was advised that the Advocate alone was not strong enough for worming a puppy under 6 months.

Poppy is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel X Cavoodle so I liked the Advocate as it treated for mites too which apparently her breed can be suceptable to because of her ears???

Poppy is almost 5 months old and I'm tossing up between Advocate and Sentinal Spectrum Chews. IF I went with Advocate I would only have to treat with Drontal AS WELL for one more month. Then I could just use Advocate right?

For HER breed...which one would you go with?

And where can I buy online for less?

    Thanks again!

Who advised you that Advocate was not strong enough? Considering its price, you would hope you are getting top quality treatment.
As long as you are regurly grooming(brushing and cleaning out the ears), and cleaning bedding, then its quite unlikely you will get mites, therefore don't need to worry about 'treating' it as such with Advocate.

Honestly, most brands will do the job well. Just keep it simple! You don't need to get complicated
To answer your question, go Advocate this month, and next month go a drontal tablet for worms and Frontline for fleas.
Beware, expensive is not always best.

It was my Vet who advised me of that. She advised I use Advocate AND Drontal in the same month. Thats what I've been doing for the past 3 months.

If I buy Advocate I will buy a 3 or 6 month pack and will keep using it for that period of time. Same with the Sentinal.

I do check her ears often and wash her bedding and toys when I wash her.

Since we got Poppy I have NEVER seen a flea on her. I'm assuming if she did have fleas I would see right?

I forgot to mention I need Heartworm protection too as she didn't have the 12 month vaccine. So I don't think I could do just Drontal and Frontline as they don't have heartworm protection...I don't think.

Thanks so much for the advice! I feel like this is a complicated decision but shouldn't be.

At the moment I'm leaning towards Advocate as its what we have been using in the past and was reccomended to us by Poppy's seller and our vet.

If its not broken, don't fix it.

If what you're doing now is working, why change?

Good news. Oh, sorry to make things a little more complicated, but its a good idea to change worming/flea treatment around every now and then. Fleas and worms are good at becoming imune.

I can't comment on whats right for Poppy's breed as I've never had a swf so I have no knowledge, I would rec sentinal though as thats what I have been rec'd and use. (just a general rec)

If her current products are working for her and you still have them, use them up and then if your still curious to try another product then switch over later.

MyF - I've been thinking about what you said re: most expensive doesnt = BEST.

So what would be a cheaper option that Advocate?

    Drontal & Frontline?

As much as I like Advocate it is VERY exxy and if I order online it won't be here by Friday which is when she is due.

Amy, what works well for some dogs doesn't seem to do the trick for others.

I use good old Frontline, and simply worm every 3 months. BUT, I know a lot of ppl who really aren't fussed on the Frontline, and have switched to something else with excellent results - so it really is each to their own.
You might not necessarily notice fleas on Poppy should she have them, but you would notice her scratching if she had them.

Re the ear mites, I agree with Myf, don't worry too much about treating something that isn't there and hasn't happened yet. I much prefer to advise you to simply keep her ears in good clean order and make sure any ear hair is plucked on a regular basis IF it interferes with air-flow down the ear canal.

Look, this is just another example that all vets do NOT have the same opinions re treatment and products.
Just do what YOU feel is working for you and Poppy.

If what you're already using is working then I would stick with it
I can't be of any help regarding Poppy's breed but with Troopa we use Drontal allwormer every 3 months.
We were lucky in the fact that when he got his yearly heartworm vax we got a card from the vet that entitles us to a years worth of the allwormers. We just take the card to the vet every 3 months and they give us the tablet.
Drontal was also what the breeder we got him from recommended so that was a bonus
