Thread: He Has Put on Weight

Default He Has Put on Weight

I don't understand why Ollie is fat again.
For the past few weeks he has been having 1 scoop of Iiams weight management kibble a day, 1 small bone a week and that's it other than water.
He also has a half hour walk almost everyday (which is becoming a strain because of the weight gain).

Miley is on the exact same diet and regime and is a perfect weight

Have you had him vet checked, there may not be anything wrong, he may just be a dog that is fat, like people.

I have no idea how much to feed a pug so will leave that to some one else, hope you get an answer soon

An average male Pug should be averaging somewhere between 8-10kgs, females less if my memory serves me correctly.

I researched Pugs a while back when I used to be so interested in the breed that I read almost every Pug book I found. Anyway.. I know that you mentioned what you feed him but, Pugs can be very greedy dogs.

Your next door neighbour or anybody else hasn't been chucking food scraps over the fence for him? Lol.

One key concept is that Pugs do put weight on easily.

Drop in or phone your vets, they probably know more than we do.

Just found this, thought I would share, it may not all be true though.

Pugs like to eat. Pugs exist to eat. People exist to feed Pugs.

Pugs put on weight very easily. Excess weight can cause breathing problems as well as shortening their life. Most Pugs do well on 1 cup of dry food a day. This is for the averge "couch potato".
I am not sure if that helps, but I hope it has.

    Belle its more like 6-9kg

Im actually at work right now(on the desk) and I asked one of the nurses who owns 3 Pugs how much a they should be eating. She said 1/2 ounce per pound of weight.
She also said that two 15 minute walks a day is better than 1 half an hour walk.
For breeds like the Pug, I actually think a free run does more good then say a lead walk around the block.

Some animals (and humans) have more efficient metabolisms than others, so the ones with efficient metabolisms, almost everything they eat gets efficiently converted to energy for the body to use or store. For those with less efficient metabolisms - they need to eat a lot more before they get the same energy available. Most of their food can go straight through undigested/processed.

I think it explains the easy weight gain of certain humans whose ancestors survived long boat rides without enough food eg descendents of African slaves and descendents of Polynesians who made those huge boat trips around the pacific. And probably those of Eurpean descent whose ancestors survived periods of not enough food. Well anyone whose ancestors survived long periods of not enough food - would be selected for "efficient metabolisms" which is not so great where there's plenty of food.

Yes, I agree with the metabolism. That would pretty much sum it up.

I've heard of this in humans but not dogs, lol. Good to know.

Well I figured out Ollie has been eating Mileys left overs.
I have changed meal time regime.

They eat inside together and have 10 minutes to eat. If Miley walks away from her food she goes hungry because I throw her leftovers in the garbage.

I thought that someone would mention that shortly, and what do you know, it's true! Lol
