Giardia is a protozoan parasite (not a worm) and it is actually a zoonotic disease, meaning you can become infected too. I don't know the drugs but I would trust the vet. Here is a link from the CDC to give you some information about the disease and how humans can become infected.

In your case the most important thing for your puppies is to not let them get in contact with the faeces of the infected dogs (and the infected dogs actually). I don't know though how fast the drugs work. Maybe ask your vet again.

Metronidazole. It can upset their stomach too and cause appetite problems. Try to make sure tehy have their tablets with food to minimise the upset as these drugs are very strong. Yoghurt might be good for them to eat, or soft cooked chicken.

Yes, make sure everything is kept clean. Diluted bleach is probably best for cleaning floors. Wash beds and blankets often and hang in sunshine to kill any germs if you can - or get new ones if you can't.

I got a giardia infection from sailing on the Derwent - yes got very wet, soaked, dunked underwater and probably swallowed some of the river.

So I thought it was a water bourne parasite. You will need to make sure everybody's drinking water is clean. Boiling the water for a minute will kill it or using a very special filter (one that does membrane filtration or osmosis).

Don't let the dogs drink or swim in the local creeks or dams or troughs. Unless you're sure they're clean and free of that parasite.
