    Default Mites/Mange

A few questions I have and as I can't seem to find all of the answers to my questions I am deferring to you guys

To start with, what exactly is mange?
What are mites - just little crawlies or what?
    How is it treated?
Are the options for treatment that don't involve medications? Natural remedies etc?
The biggest one... Is it contagious?

Sorry for all the questions, found out today that the NDN's neighbour has mange and he's been sticking his head under the fence. Apparently they are taking him to the vet next week because they don't think it's important enough this week.

Batty and NDN's dog have been having contact under the fence over the last couple of days and I'm pretty worried about the whole situation, just wanting a better idea of what I'm up against without ringing the vet just yet

    Hi AGB

Some of the spot on flea protection have mange protection too.

I know what spider mites look like - but they're a problem for plants not dogs.

Pretty sure mange and mites will transfer from dog to dog. Not sure they will transfer to humans if there is a convenient dog or cat around instead. Birds get mites too - but probably different ones. Not 100% sure.

If your NDN care of their dog is second rate, I'd fill that hole between the fences and think about having something that they can't transfer fleas through.

Not sure about natural remedies for mites, mange or fleas. Mint tea sprayed on is supposed to help with fleas but it's not as effective as the spot ons. No idea what you'd use for mites.

Angela, it depends on what type of mange the next door neighbour has.

    Dog Owner's Guide: Mange

    natural remedies

one article I read said use borax - yes natural but hardly non-toxic.

Time for wormwood hedge on that side of the garden me thinks. It certainly repels me. But I like garlic.

Ok, from what I can tell by looking over the fence at the dog next door it's demodectic, it's only on his head (has me very worried) and all holes are now completely blocked under the fence. Thankfully the gap was only enough for noses to meet, but I'm worried that that is enough for it to pass on?

I'm hoping that if there is something simple and natural that I can do now that will either help repel it now or treat the it fast if he has picked it up.

Ok, I could be wrong! The first thing I read says that demo is patchy and usually around face and eyes, but then it says the same thing for scabies! I'm confused and Batty is going to the vet I think!

    Hi AGB

I think if you got a spot on for Batty, she'd be right. If you can't find any signs of skin damage on her, it might be hard for a vet to find somewhere to do the skin scraping to find out what kind of mange it is. At least one of the articles I found suggested it's hard to tell just by looking what kind of mange it is. The scabies one is particularily horrid though. Will make people itch too.

does scabies but not the other sorts as best I can tell. Sigh

But I thought the dog next door had suspected mange? Not Batty?

Dog next door does, I've made an appt with the vet (Batty is due a health check anyway) for Monday. I'm worried that something may start to show over the weekend. Batty and NDN dog have been touching noses through the fence and NDN dog's marks are around it's face.

Hy, do you know if I can use the spot on when Batty is already on Sentinel?

Probably just panicking but Batty's already only just starting to have hair grow back and everything I'm reading is talking about it being related to the immune system.
