    Default Mya and Fleas

Unfortunately Mya has bought a number of visitors with her, nasty little buggers. Now, she had Frontline applied the day before she came here, that would have been Thursday. How soon does Frontline work and is there anything else I can use to help in the meantime. I've put my rug away so they have nowhere to live in the house (hopefully) as we are tile floors everywhere the dogs are allowed to go.

I'm sure the answer to this is probably on the forum somewhere but I really haven't got time to trawl through the searches to find it. Anyone's help would be very appreciated.

    Hi tKay,

It would have been much better if the rescuer had Frontlined Mya a fair few days (at least) before her arrival at your place.
Once Frontline is applied, it can sometimes appear as if the fleas are worse, and going ballistic, so to speak. Don't worry about that, that is normal.
I assume Jenna has been treated previously with Frontline? If not, get some onto her too immediately, and any other animals you have such as cats. This will break the entire cycle.

No offence to rescuer intended, but I must admit I wouldn't be too impressed with this, but that's just me.

A very thorough hydrobath should have been given to ensure ALL fleas were removed from her body, then a further 2-3 days allowed to let the natural oils return to her coat and skin before applying Frontline for future protection against reinfestation etc.

I've been reading that alot of people feel that Frontline is not working very effectively anymore and that Advatage/Advantix is much better. I would like to try it but do I have to wait a while to use it on Mya, seeing as she only had Frontline put on on Thursday? I don't want to overload her system with chemicals.

Jenna was last Frontlined nearly 2 weeks ago so i think I will change to advantix for her this weekend I don't want her ending up getting infested.

Yeah I'd wait a while, but it's up to you. I'm personally not a fan of Advantage because I've seen a lot of problems with it being used on dogs who get wet/swim a lot. But if Jenna and Tkay don't go swimming or get wet all that often, then certainly swap to Advantage/Advantix and give it a trial. That's the best way to find out what works for you and your dogs.

As your home area is tiled where the dogs go, I wouldn't waste my time nor money in using flea bombs or anything like that, as once the fleas find their host, the Frontline (or whatever you choose to use) will do the job.

All the best - I hate fleas too! Yuck.

Hi Tkay, usually with these chemicals it is a fortnight in between before you can apply another dose of any of these.

Frontline says its ok to apply every two weeks especially in areas of paralysis ticks.

I've swapped to revolution - which is waterfast in 2 hours - bonus, because a 6 month pack does heartworm, and comes with a 2x3month dose of intestinal and tape worm tablets, so overall is cheaper per 6 to 12 months than frontline plus worm chews plus heartworm injections plus extra visits to the vet - though I had to do that because Frosty kept growing into new dose ranges.

I also think it's a good idea to change brands from time to time so the parasites don't build a resistence to the active ingredients.

Hey Tkay, I have always wondered, what breed is Jenna? She looks Maremma-like.

She does look a bit like a mini Maremma, a few people have said that. She is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Samoyed (before i knew any better )
